Your sentiments are not absurd at all! And here's proof! I don't know if you are a Frasier fan, but Martin Crane's eulogy to his chair starts at about 12:56 in this video.

To answer your questions, I read most books in the bathtub these days (!); I have three sons, so it was the only place I could go when they were younger where they'd leave me alone long enough to read without any interruptions. I got to like it, so I still read in the tub even though my boys are mostly grown up at this point!

In terms of Tolkien, though, it's not a place that I associate with reading him, but more a time. To me, reading LOTR late at night, and then going out to look at the stars, is very special. That's what I did when I finished ROTK for the first time a Long Time Ago, and that memory has stayed with me.
