In a small way, I feel a bit sorry for Billy Connolly Can't Post

I assume that this is the right area to post this, given that it is about an actor/personality figure.

Reading another interview with Billy (where he again talks about not liking Tolkien's books or people who have read them), something occurred to me which I thought quite amusing: by playing this role, Billy is going to have to answer all sorts of bizarre questions from Tolkien fans for the rest of his life!

Now, as someone who couldn't imagine what life would be like without the works of Tolkien, I find it difficult to put myself in his shoes, but if his role in The Hobbit is sufficient enough (i.e. extended by the transformation of two to three films), then Connolly will have to live in the shadow of Dain Ironfoot for the rest of his existence, someone who is a. A Tolkien character, and b.Much smaller than Connolly!

On a serious note though, I do feel sorry for Connolly in that he apparently had one of the most terrible childhoods imaginable. This is also not an anti-Connolly post (It's always fun watching his comedy programs!)

"Radagast is, of course, a worthy wizard, a master of shapes and changes of hue, and he has much lore of herbs and beasts, and birds are especially his friends."-Gandalf, The Lord of the Rings.

I'll always think of him as Fido. [In reply to] Can't Post

That's Connolly as the titular zombie in Fido. Great movie!

ETA: I see what you're getting at... since he isn't a Tolkien fan, and doesn't like Tolkien fans (curiouser and curiouser) it is a shame he will be forever associated with The Hobbit. I guess it's the price one must pay for a peerage.Wink

EETA: This probably could have gone on Hobbit...

I think he is already [In reply to] Can't Post

so well established as an actor and comedian with a distinctive style that he won't be overshadowed by one role in The Hobbit.

Lots of actors in LotR only became super famous household names after TH, but those who were already well known are given plenty of credit for their other roles.

I see what you mean about not being a Tolkien fan, though. I wasn't aware of that! That must be frustrating for him in some ways.
