Saw these before [In reply to] Can't Post

Someone on another board got these. It's a nice looking set but in book form this doesn't need to be split up.

I presume they split the book when the film was still split in 2? [In reply to] Can't Post

Seems unnecessary now (not that it was necessary in the first place!)

Agreed [In reply to] Can't Post

Has to be the reason why but I agree it wasn't needed.

Possibly not the worst - so far. [In reply to] Can't Post

Personally, I think that map and key look tacky.

I don't mind so much... [In reply to] Can't Post

... 'cause it's only split into TWO...

... whereas, LOTR has been split into SEVEN?!

My turn to ask... WHY?! It's not like it's written for eight-year-olds with a smaller attention span, thus requiring the splitting up of sections. It's written for teens and adults, who I think can handle a large volume or three.

(Actually, I don't understand why they make "cases" for paperbacks... they're just not worth it. They are much more needed and desired in hardcover, IMO.)

7?! [In reply to] Can't Post

I've never seen this before. But I agree ... far stranger having a 7 series LOTR. Would be interesting to find out where they are split ...

At a guess [In reply to] Can't Post

at each of the six books plus the appendices. Remember each of the three volumes of LOTR had two books.

You haven't seen that? [In reply to] Can't Post

It's an aesthetic thing...pretty cool really. Each of the seven volumes has one letter of TOLKIEN printed at the top so the author's name is spelled out across the bindings. They are split just as the regular editions are into six "books" plus the appendices. I haven't bought them myself. If I did, it would be because the set would look nice on the shelf.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey--The Movie Storybook by Paddy Kempshall

No doubt to be followed by similar storybooks for The Desolation of Smaug and There and Back Again.

What is a movie storybook? [In reply to] Can't Post

Anything that needlessly cuts Tolkien's book/s in pieces is just wrong ...

In this case we have a storybook adapting the movie that adapts (1/3 of) Tolkien's book. I can understand it from the merchandizing perspective, but it is still pretty horrid.

Because that's how Tolkien laid out the books [In reply to] Can't Post

LOTR is a six-book story, with the seventh being the Appendices.

The three-volume structure was always a bit uncomfortable for Tolkien, as were the titles of those three volumes, which he was never quite happy with.

There are two seven-volume sets - [In reply to] Can't Post

- naturally, the geordie library has a copy of each. Smile

Here's a link to a relevant page -

http://www.tolkienbooks.net/php/gallery.php?subsection=27

The thing about these sets is that the six main books each have their own title, as Tolkien had wished. Oh, and the black set came with a cd of Tolkien reading out excerpts.

Yes, but Tolkien was against the idea of splitting his books... [In reply to] Can't Post

... and this just takes it too far.
