"Blue Harvest"-like working title for The Hobbit Can't Post

Heya there,

On big-scale movie project, especially on early planning stages, often fake titles are used, in order to make contracts, renting studios and equipment, hire freelancers - without being confronted with overpriced charges due to the high profile of the project.

As it is well known, "Return of the Jedi" had such a title: "Blue Harvest" - in order to obfuscate the intentions of the production company.

Now I wonder what such a title for "The Hobbit" project might be. Any ideas? :)

Little Rivers [In reply to] Can't Post

I am sure I remember one of the embedded TORN reporters (maybe Cliff?) saying the name was Little Rivers, and showing off a copy of the Little Rivers News, which was a private newsletter written for the crew and cast. Or maybe I'm imaging things...!

Do they still do that with massive film productions, like The Hobbit? [In reply to] Can't Post

Wouldn't it be more beneficial to say it is The Hobbit, than not?

It was actually hiding Revenge of the Jedi [In reply to] Can't Post

Lucas changed the title a few weeks before the premiere.

Considering Blue Harvest had nothing to do with Star Wars, and was a parody of the book Red Harvest which had nothing to do with Star Wars, the fake title could be practically anything.

I think so [In reply to] Can't Post

wikipedia says: Working titles are used primarily for two reasons-the first being that an official title has not yet been decided upon and the working title is being used as a filler for naming purposes, the second being to intentionally disguise the production of a project.

But I think there's also worry about theft during transport of things both during production and with the final cut of the film.

Apparently LOTR had these working titles:
Changing Seasons[3] The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Grand Tour[3] The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Till Death, For Glory[3] The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

If you want the citations for those titles, visit the wikipedia page:

Thanks Magpie [In reply to] Can't Post

I hadn't realised LOTR had working titles.

I was thinking that the production team would get more positive reactions if the people they were dealing with knew that they were working with The Hobbit, rather than a something else.

well... [In reply to] Can't Post

I think the people they are working with do know what's going on. They are in on the 'con'.

It's the casual by standers. Couriers, etc. Those that are handling the material or information in transit that might want to hijack the information/item for nefarious purposes.

There's a funny episode of the tv show "Breaking In" called "Take the Movie and Run" about a team trying to protect that transport of the only copy of a cult film.

Yes... [In reply to] Can't Post

I think that's right Magpie, I seem to remember seeing the temporary road signs put up to direct the crews to locations. They used the initials LR, instead of saying it was the Hobbit to avoid traffic jams and people descending to spy on the filming. Unless I am imagining the whole thing!

they still do this [In reply to] Can't Post

so that when they ship to movie theaters or dubbing houses they don't garner a lot of attention:

Dark Knight Rises was Magnus Rex
The Avengers was Group Hug

Fellowship was Changing Seasons
Two Towers was Grand Tour
Return of the King was Til Death, For Glory

The truth is... there are no Hobbit films! [In reply to] Can't Post

The entire thing is just a fake title to hide the fact that Peter Jackson is filming Star Wars: Episode 7-9.

13 new Jedi Knights have been cloned after the end of the Empire, to rebuild the order. Unfortunately, their genes became mixed with Ewok DNA, so they turned out short and hairy. But their leader, Thoo Rynn, is determined to prove their worth anyway.

They recruit Bill Bobaqqins, a local boy, to help them kill Han Solo, who has been fused with his ship and mutated into a dragon-like entity after an accident with some weird bio-sludge. And that person with the fake name "Gandalf", the wise old man who helps them, is of course none other than Luke Skywalker, 50 years after the setting of Episode VI, who is desperate to put his old friend out of his misery.

I am sorry if some of you are disappointed now.

A lot of hands handle a film and all the promotional material related.

Literally hundreds.

It's so hard to keep things a secret these days. Crazy

That was the rumor. [In reply to] Can't Post

But I don't think it was ever confirmed, and there's always the possibility that they changed it after it "leaked".

They used more than one fake name over the course of LOTR - the Jamboree name that I mentioned, and the names they put on the screening copies of the film that Magpie listed. They might do the same with The Hobbit.
