Flyer art for "Tolkien Reading Day" Can't Post

This was "Tolkien_Forever"'s second year of participating in "Tolkien Reading Day" and this is the flyer I created to promote it. The twilight colors represent that the readers are so engrossed in their books that the whole day has passed! It didn't occur to me when I designed this piece that the large black area would use a TON of ink; I was too enamored with the dramatic impact to change it. It did turn out to be an expensive print job, for that reason. Oh well; now I know better. The British Tolkien Society asked me to reconfigure a blank for their use next year (their standard letter size is different than ours: taller and narrower than 8.5" x 11"); that's the version I posted here.

That's great! [In reply to] Can't Post

I like the mood too. Dusk is a favorite time, perhaps because it is so short. Isn't it funny that we still have to think about ink issues! It sounds like one of Tolkien's problems in the 1950's like having a 3 color illustration rather then two.

Thanks orcbane! [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes, printing costs are still an issue. This is a 4-color illustration and the saturation+coverage drains fresh ink-jet cartridges after only about 12 copies!
(At least, that's what happens on my small HP copier/printer.) That can get very expensive when replacement cartridge sets cost $40. Fortunately both of the libraries where we held Reading Day were able to make copies also, as did some of the participating TF members, so we had enough to distribute.
I also made a black&white version with the artwork smaller to help keep the ink costs down.
Which illustration did Tolkien want to have printed using 3 colors, do you know?
