I love your Aragorn [In reply to] Can't Post

You have a wonderful line quality and a good eye for contrast. I love the look you choose. It captures that certain character of his.

You can look at as movie art, but I prefer to call it portrait drawing. It is a wonderful portrait. I am glad you shared it with us.

I wished I had thought of doubling up my images sooner. I hope that Altaira (or someone) captured your image for prosperity.

Thanks! [In reply to] Can't Post

Thank you very much! As for the image, it is one of my favorite images I have of him... top 5, I guess. I've always wanted to draw it.

Movie art, portrait art, both work :)

Heh, it's fine. I have my art site linked in my footer if anyone is really *that* interested. *g*

Derwent pencils [In reply to] Can't Post

I lover Derwent pencils. Unfortunately, the store that used to sell them, closed last summer. I bought all (almost) of the pencils they had left. But they were missing a few size. What was great is they had every number up to 9b! I use strips of paper to measure.

In Reply To
To answer your questions, I use Canson paper that my parents bought me for Christmas; it works pretty well. I use Derwent pencils, usually ranging from 4H to 3B, though I used some 5B for the darker areas in this pic. The 4H is usually only for the sketch and the lightest parts of the pic, like the shading in the white of the eyeballs. I was taught to measure with string in my art class last fall, and that itself has helped in my "eyeballing". If I do any measuring, it's usually just with my fingers (which usually doesn't work that well, anyways *g*).

Exceptional!!!!!!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

I had not seen anything but your Elf in the woods and self portrait when I left my other post. But this and some of your other work on Deviant Art are extremely good!!!
I think you have an excellent chance at a career in art!!! I like the artistic pose of your photo also-it reminded me of myself at your age. I know what you mean when you refer to original and trying to pull the picture from your imagination rather than copy exactly what you see. I have found it takes practice. Plus I recently read an article on the adolescent brain and the brain doesn't really mature until around age 25 so as you get older it might get easier to draw from your imagination. I found a Drawing On The Right side of the Brain course to be helpful too.
I wonder what it would be like to do drawings for the Hobbit movie (if they ever make it) or how they go about taking applications for something like that. I just got a John Howe art book titled Myth and Magic- The art of John Howe at Barnes and Noble and it said he brought a bunch of things like swords and armor with him to New Zealand to use as reference pieces when he worked on the films. I also got some of those foil packs of Lord of the Rings art-collector cards some months ago and your work blows most of it away. Well I had better get off of this computer before I become one with the recliner. I am glad I finally signed up to this board ( it only took a few years!) there are a lot of really interesting people here! Take care, Karen

It took me a while to contact her for her permission, as she's currently jet setting around the world Wink, but answer me she did! So please enjoy!

get the ball rolling. I do love her Aragorn.
It has a lot of strength, and rich in contrast, just like the character.
