Hobbit biscuits coming to UK Can't Post

I thought One Ring users would be interested in the following story about a German biscuit supplier bringing its Hobbit biscuit brand to the UK in the upcoming movie:

The Grocer Hobbit story

Full discolsure: I am a writer for The Grocer magazine, and author of the article, but am a genuine Tolkien fan and thought it would be of interest to other fans.

The biscuits might share the same name as the upcoming film [In reply to] Can't Post

But more importantly, they share the same name as the book!

Thanks for sharing, and welcome to TORn Smile

Hmm... [In reply to] Can't Post

How can they name their biscuits after hobbits without getting a call from the Tolkien estate (or whoever manages copyright issues)?

Because it ain't the Estate, it's ZaentzCo. and Time Warner [In reply to] Can't Post

Sadly, Saul Zaentz by way of his movie-merchandising rights can and does license all kinds of crap, in full shameless George Lucas mode.

The Estate licenses almost nothing: books, and once upon a time calendars. Christopher has spent a non-trivial percentage of his waking life turning down "licensed product" proposals.

Be like Gollum - eat a Hobbit! [In reply to] Can't Post

"Is it scrumptiously crunchy, my preciousssss?"

Andy Serkis probably isn't working on anything at the moment - he's available as the perfect pitch-thing. Cool

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

Repeats to self: biscuits are cookies, biscuits are cookies [In reply to] Can't Post

I was really confused for a second there when I read that they'd come in plain and milk chocolate varieties. Then I quickly realized/remembered that UK biscuits = US cookies, which made things a lot clearer.

To be honest I was more excited when I thought they were what we in the US call biscuits. Not that I live where they will be available.

To get this far they would basically have to have clearance, wouldn't they? [In reply to] Can't Post

Especially with a spiffy movie banner on their lid.
It's not like we're dealing with a family run pub or inn, this is a full-blown company. I'm sure they know their copyright law.

Plus, like Solicitr said, it would be ZaentzCo, not the Tolkien Estate

Yes, they've been around forever in Germany [In reply to] Can't Post

And it seems nobody protested. Though until now, they didn't have film scenes on the package.

I have only tried the oatmeal variety (non-chocolate), and the sad truth is, I didn't particularly like them. They are okay, but a bit dry.

Appropriate, given that sounds like how Bilbo would taste IMO. EvilAngelicTongue

I can remember some of the food products connected with the LOTR movies. I got some LOTR candy bars at the Riverview Theater. :-)

me neither [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't particularly like them either, I actually find them too sweet. I prefer Scottish Oatcakes, even though my friends claim they taste like horse treats.
I am quite sure Bahlsen has obtained the rights to use the name a long time ago, as those bisquits have been around forever. Maybe even during a time when the story didn't have as much focus on it as it has had since the first Tolkien films came out, and thus struck a good deal.

I had to think twice too.

I love buttermilk biscuits especially (the U.S. kind). Do they have those in England (and if so, what are they called, we wonders?)

good question [In reply to] Can't Post

I hosted a few people from Cornwall, Wales, and England (at different times) and took them out to breakfast. They all ordered muffins and when asked by the waitress if they wanted sweet muffins or English muffins, they were perplexed. What's an English muffin? I described a little like a scone. Although I don't think that's a great comparison.

This page is interesting: http://ask.metafilter.com/...rican-biscuit-abroad

While we're on the subject of biscuits, how about some Blues Brothers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSF9QT4jmsQ
