If Jackson found that the material beyond the barrels was clearly going to take more than 3 hours, it would have made sense to cut it earlier and do three films, rather than run the first one 3 hours and then have to cut out too much from the rest to keep it at a reasonable time for a second film.

That being said, I am more than a little skeptical about this rumour, and believe the film is likely to be closer to 2 and half hours than 2.
