I'll give this a go, and again, no open book! [In reply to] Can't Post

1. Handses
2. Bongo and Belladonna Baggins
3. Trick question, maybe? It WAS dark, but he must have seen Smaug because of the red glow. I'd say twice. But Smaug never "saw" Bilbo.
4. The first (?) day of autumn. When the sun and moon appear in the evening sky at the same time.
5. Glamdring and Orcrist, respectively.
6. False
7. True
8. Something about "pipe weed"
9. Two wild strawberries
10. Balin and white
11. False. Fili and Kili

Ya got me on the riddle! I'm drawing a blank!

"It's a queer country out here", Pa said. "Strange things happen."
"Yes", said Ma. "I'm thankful that so far they don't happen to us."

Answers [In reply to] Can't Post

1. Who is the only female character named in The Hobbit?
Mitzi del Bra (thanks to darkstone for the heads-up)

Okay, seriously - Belladonna Took.

2. Which Dwarves died in the Battle of the Five Armies?
You probably mean which named Dwarves.

Thorin, Fili and Kili (as apparently you don't count the last one as an elf)

3. Which 5 Armies took part in the Battle of the Five Armies?
Bats, Beorn, Eagles, hobbit, wizard.

Well, this is as much of a mess as identifying the Two Towers, but in The Clouds Burst, Tolkien counts men, elves, dwarves, goblins and wargs. This still seems the best fit.

4. How high was Dwarves' secret door?
I guess the highlands above Dale rose to a few hundred meters above the Long Lake - for a river to be both fast enough to be names Running and considered by the Lake-Men as the more prominent source than the Forest River (as evidenced by their naming the southren outlet after it), it needs to fall quite impressively through a rocky terrain.
The Mountain itself must have stood at least half a kilometer (probably far more) above its near surroundings to dominate the landscape that much, and the secret door would be, at a rough guess, half-way up to its crown.
So at a very wild guess, I would say the secret door stood at an altitude of one kilometer above the Long Lake - which was pretty high up itself, as it was drained to a further inland sea.
Let's say 2000 meters above sea-level.

The passage into the Mountain was five feet high; but I am not sure the door was at the same height. Probably it was, if it was made near the zenith of the Dwarven architectural achievements.

5. What word reminds Gollum of his Grandmother?
A birthday-present, connected with the Ring.
This was the cover-story he tried to tell Gandalf, before the kindly wizard put the fear of fire upon him and wrung out the tale of Deagol's murder.

In The Hobbit, he remembered his grandmother by thinking of the wind by the river (if I remember correctly); that was how he got the answer to the Egg riddle.
Had Tolkien rewrote this chapter in 1960, he would surely make something of the golden treasure in a box as the aforementioned cover-story. Let's be thankful he didn't.

6. What is the answer to the riddle: “This thing all things devours: birds, beasts, trees, flowers. Slays king, ruins town, and beats high mountains down!”
You know, thinking of poor Durin VI, and the destruction of Celebdil with the vanishing of the Endless Stair - I would say the Moria Balrog might be a good answer!
But I somehow can't imagine it devouring flowers...

So we are left with Time.

7. What were the troll's names that the company encountered?
IHatePJ, Geekextrminator, and Smarter than U jerx.

Among them selves, they called each other Thomas Pichon (aka Tom), Norbet Schwontkowski (Bert as a short nickname), and the quartermaster was William Huggins.

8. True or false? One should never say the word muff in Beorn's presence.
I don't think a bachelor living alone would take much exception to it. However, the admins of a family friendly boards might...

But looking online, I see that the legitimate word is Dutch in origin; in which case, there is a chance Beorn might know it, and I don't want to run the risk.

9. What was gifted to the King of All Birds, and his 15 chieftains?
That's actually difficult. The Lord of the Eagles got a gold collar and was crowned, but I don't remember what his chieftains received.

On the other hand, this load of gold made him pompous and very heavy, and in the long run probably indolent and unused to long flights. This might justify dernwyn's assertion that he was different for that swift sportsbird Gwaihir.

10. What is the colour of Bilbo’s front door?
Difficult again. Green, I think - freshly painted the week before the Party.

11. Which character said: “If we don’t get blown off or drowned, or struck by lightning, we shall be picked up by some giant and kicked sky-high for a football”?
Thorin, in Over Hill and Under Hill.

By the way, that's what the sibs across the pond call "soccer".

Answers - part 2 [In reply to] Can't Post

1. What was Gollum's second guess when Bilbo asked, "What have I got in my pocket?"?
A knife.

Considering that at first Bilbo had Sting in his hand, and than put his hand into the pocket and just took it out - does that make him a real cheat? Or was it the other hand he put in?

2. Who were Bilbo’s parents?

Bungo and Belladonna Took-Baggins.
After his wife died, Bungo dropped the first name so he could sneer at young Odo's pretensions in adding 'Sackville'.

3. How many times does Bilbo *see* Smaug?

In On the Doorstep, he is said to look at the Map many times. And a drawing of the dragon is there, above the Mountain (per Balin, An Unexpected Party).

But in life - twice.

4. When is Durin's Day?

It might have been Monday; I saw the new Moon on Tuesday while there was still daylight, but the first moon of the last month of autumn (also known as New Year's Day according to the Jewish calendar) should have been seen the day before, and I didn't notice.

5. Beater and Biter were the names of....?
A position in Quidditch and a criminal in The Clash of Kings.

Honestly, do these Tolkiien-epigoni need to reuse the names of Gandalf's and Thorin's swords?

6. True or false? Apart from proper names like "Elrond," "Glamdring," and "Gondolin," mithril is the only Elvish (Sindarin) word found in The Hobbit?
How many non-English words do we have at all in The Hobbit? Of the top of my head, I can only remember carroc and cram.

So I guess it is true; and must mention that it was only added in the second edition.

7. True of false? Thranduil’s Halls are located in the East Bight of Mirkwood?
This is not properly speaking a Hobbit question; the East Bight does not appear in the Map of Wilderland.

But no, they were some four hundred miles to the north.

8. What are the last word(s) in The Hobbit?

Pipe-weed jar (in the anachronistic form 'tobbaco').

9. Which fruit did Bilbo eat after escaping the Misty Mountains? A bonus point for telling me how many of these fruits he ate.

A bit of sorrel and a few wild strawberries (cheating, I looked in the discussion I led last month and found out that three of them)

10. Which Dwarf is the second to arrive, and what colour beard does he have?
Balin, white. And a scarlet hood, right?

11. True or false? It was Balin and Dwalin who found the “dry cave” for the company to stay in, and protect themselves against the stormy weather?
False. Come on! Send Balin in this kind of weather to crawl along the cliff? What of his rheumatism?

It was Fili and Kili
.

Thank you! those were fun!

Closed book, of course!

1. What was Gollum's second guess when Bilbo asked, "What have I got in my pocket?"?

"Your hand"

2. Who were Bilbo’s parents?

Drogo & Primilia

3. How many times does Bilbo *see* Smaug?

Once

4. When is Durin's Day?

Just before Durin's night?

The day Bilbo found the secret door.

Oh, and it's some complicated formula involving the sun & the moon both being in the sky in the fall, and something or another.

5. Beater and Biter were the names of....?

My older brother & sister.

6. True or false? Apart from proper names like "Elrond," "Glamdring," and "Gondolin," mithril is the only Elvish (Sindarin) word found in The Hobbit?

False. Tra-la-la-lallly is Sindarin for "exactly how long HAS it been since you've showered?"

7. True of false? Thranduil’s Halls are located in the East Bight of Mirkwood?

I'm not entirely sure what a Bight is, but I'm going with False. It's pretty much in the middle.

8. What are the last word(s) in The Hobbit?

"Wow - I don't remember ANY of that being in the book." Oh wait, those are the last words in the theater the night of the Hobbit movie.

Ahem...the book? "And he lived happily ever after until the end of his days."

9. Which fruit did Bilbo eat after escaping the Misty Mountains? A bonus point for telling me how many of these fruits he ate.

Wild strawberries. 3.

10. Which Dwarf is the second to arrive, and what colour beard does he have?

Balin, white.

11. True or false? It was Balin and Dwalin who found the “dry cave” for the company to stay in, and protect themselves against the stormy weather?

False. Fili & Kili were sent, being some 50 years younger than the other dwarves (i.e. they got outvoted).

Extra round:
Errr, no clue.
Notta

And I think I put Eggses as the answer to the proper question - which you left blank for an answer.

How I got a point for guessing the word Bilbo is found 837 times when it's actually found 554 times is beyond me.

back in the day, we rewarded clever, crazy answers with some sort of alternate scoring system (Darkstone always won). I am proud to have earned a point for that answer. I even told my family at dinner about that answer. :-)

Happiness: money matters, but less than we think and not in the way that we think. Family is important and so are friends, while envy is toxic -- and so is excessive thinking. Beaches are optional. Trust is not. Neither is gratitude. - The Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner as summarized by Lily Fairbairn. And a bit of the Hobbit reading thrown in never hurts. - NottaSackville
