Questions for The Silmarillion fans I Can't Post

I came across this questionnaire on several Japanese blogs and fan sites, and thought it might be fun to post it here too. The actual questionnaire has 50 questions, which is way too long, so I cut down on several questions and decided to separate it into 2 parts. The first part is about the characters. You can answer from UT, CoH and HoME too. I translated it so some of the questions might sound kinda weird, but anyways I hope you enjoy it!

1. Who is the most loyal friend?
2. The most uncaring character?
3. The unconventional hero?
4. The coolest villain?
5. The most handsome?
6. The most beautiful? (Aside from Luthien!)
7. The nicest character?
8. The most badass?
9. Worst father?
10. Which character would you want for a brother or sister?
11. Who would you NOT want for a brother or sister?
12. Who do you want to marry?
13. Which character can you never forgive?
14. If you were a Maia, which Vala/Valie would you like to serve?
15. What kind of dog do you imagine Huan to be?
16. If you could be a character (or anyone!) in the Silmarillion, who would you be and what will you do?
17. Which character have you changed your opinion of each time you read about him/her?
18. If you could cast one character, whom would you cast for whom?

Questions [In reply to] Can't Post

I have vague recollections of having seen questions like this before, probably here.

I could answer some of these questions again, but I find myself always going back to focus on the Valar with things like this. It turns out I have very few pleasant things to say about them. Let's just say that while I am satisfied that I finally got around to reading the Silmarillion, and I am not judging the author because it may have been intended, I am thoroughly unimpressed by the Valar and much more impressed by the countless victims of their petty, capricious, inflexible, intolerant and negligent acts through the ages. I think of the Valar as unworthy. That alone answers many of these questions.

I thought Ulmo was pretty caring, [In reply to] Can't Post

but I agree I can't say the same about the rest of the Valar. But I honestly wasn't thinking of the Valar when I saw the questions. I was almost sure the House of Finwe would be ruling all the answers. (':P')

My answers [In reply to] Can't Post

1. Who is the most loyal friend?
Beleg. Loyal to a fault.

2. The most uncaring character?
Orodreth seemed uncaring when Finrod went off to help Beren with only ten companions. I don't know what he was thinking when he took up the crown. How could he just leave his brother like that?

3. The unconventional hero?
Turin.

4. The coolest villain?
Glaurung was pretty awesome.

5. The most handsome?
Man: Turin, Elf: Maedhros

6. The most beautiful? (Aside from Luthien!)
Probably Luthien's mother, Melian. Or Idril.

7. The nicest character?
Tuor. And Finrod.

8. The most badass?
Feanor. The greatest Elf that ever lived.

9. Worst father?
Eol defintely.

10. Which character would you want for a brother or sister?
Maglor. The songs I get to hear!

11. Who would you NOT want for a brother or sister?
Many. Including Eol and Maeglin.

12. Who do you want to marry?
I love Turin and Maedhros, but the thought of marrying either is daunting.

13. Which character can you never forgive?
Thingol for his obsession for jewels, which led to the fall of Doriath and Sirion.

14. If you were a Maia, which Vala/Valie would you like to serve?
Este, and tend the gardens of Lorien.

15. What kind of dog do you imagine Huan to be?
Somewhere between a Siberian Husky and an Irish Wolfhound.

16. If you could be a character (or anyone!) in the Silmarillion, who would you be and what will you do?
I would do anything to be an Elf in Gondolin.

17. Which character have you changed your opinion of each time you read about him/her?
Quite a few...But Maedhros and Maglor especially are hard to define.

18. If you could cast one character, whom would you cast for whom?
Still thinking.

Fallible gods [In reply to] Can't Post

Seriously: I agree that the Valar made many questionable decisions (or no decisions at all, when they should have).

But maybe we are seeing this through the tinted glasses of Western, Christian-inspired, monotheistic culture. We are used to have one infallible, all-powerful God, whose decisions and actions always have to make sense and who is the very definition of "good". (Which puts us - well, at least the believers among us - into the well-known theological dilemmas, like how such a powerful god can allow evil to happen.)

The Valar are much closer to, and inspired by, ancient polytheistic religions like the Norse or Greco-Roman pantheon. There you have all kinds of questionable behaviour. Gods can make mistakes, be grumpy or petty, or give in to lesser desires. I mean, compared to Zeus, Manwe is almost a nice chap. At least he doesn't chase Elvish girls around half of his time.

Side note: I am aware that the Valar are not really "gods" per definition, more like angelic beings. IMO Tolkien, as a devout Catholic, was in a dilemma here between his beliefs - requiring Eru as an all powerful supreme God - and his mythological and storytelling interests - lesser, fallible gods make better stories. So he ended up with a weird hybrid of monotheism and polytheism.

In fact, after reading the Book of Lost Tales, I wished that Tolkien would have let the Valar have even more shades of grey. There were two additional Valar who only exist in early drafts, Makar and MŽŠsse. Their domain would have been war and chaos, and while they lived in Valinor and did not side with Morgoth, they were not exactly well-liked among the good guys either. I think they could have become very interesting, had Tolkien chosen to flesh them out, as gods torn between good and evil.

answers [In reply to] Can't Post

1. Who is the most loyal friend?
Fingon. And Beleg.
2. The most uncaring character?
Dunno.. Cirdan?
3. The unconventional hero?
Bilbo. But since it was supposed to be about the Silmarillion, then it's Turin (even if I dispise him)
4. The coolest villain?
Glaurung
5. The most handsome?
Maedhros hands down. Or should I say "hand"?)))
6. The most beautiful? (Aside from Luthien!)
Aredhel
7. The nicest character?
Finrod, Fingon (HoME-5 if I remember correctly has a breathtaking description of his character)
8. The most badass?
Feanor, Feanor & Feanor!
9. Worst father?
Nolofinwe (Fingolfin), Eol.
10. Which character would you want for a brother or sister?
Finrod. Sometimes I envy Galadriel!)
11. Who would you NOT want for a brother or sister?
Turgon. Maeglin.
12. Who do you want to marry?
I love Maedhros, but the thought of marrying him is somewhat terrifying.
13. Which character can you never forgive?
The first place goes to Morgoth.
Close second is Thingol. His old friend is killed by Morgoth, many of his people are killed my Morgoth's orcs? He is sitting in Doriath, never cares of the war. His people (his brother's people) are killed by Feanor and his sons? Thingol bans Quenya! His daughter runs of, she might be dead, and he mourns the loss of Daeron, he cannot forgive sons of Feanor for it of all things!.. He doesn't care about the Oath or its consequences. He just enshured the demise of Beleriand.
14. If you were a Maia, which Vala/Valie would you like to serve?
Namo. He is the coolest Vala of them all))
15. What kind of dog do you imagine Huan to be?
Siberian Husky 3 metres high.
16. If you could be a character (or anyone!) in the Silmarillion, who would you be and what will you do?
Can I go to Himring and fight some orks, please?)
17. Which character have you changed your opinion of each time you read about him/her?
Sons of Feanor.
18. If you could cast one character, whom would you cast for whom?
I really don't know...
