PJ specifically said that Tauriel was Silvan. I think it was back when Evangeline Lilly was cast.

. . . by a number of people Maybe it's just me, but I was hoping for something to differentiate the two groups.
The Road goes ever on and on Down from the door where it began Now far ahead the Road has gone And I must follow, if I can "Thorin sat up with a start. 'Something is not right,' he muttered to himself as he stood up and looked towards the mirror . . . . . . . . . 'Durin's bones', he gasped, 'what's happened to my beard?'"

. . . we are also discussing the look of the Mirkwood elves on this thread: http://newboards.theonering.net/...i?post=488348#488348 As Thranduil and Legolas are Sindarin elves, and they 'rule' over Silvan elves, my speculation is that they want similarities between Thranduil and Legolas to differentiate them from the Silvan elves, apparently Tauriel and the rest.

From a few days ago:
I always pictured Thranduil [In reply to] Quote | Reply To This Post With a massive, tall regal headdress, full of flora and perhaps some antlers. Something you might expect from a woodland king. Would look good on Lee Pace. PJ, GDT, Lee, Howe, and anyone else who helped design this, have the same vision of Thranduil as I do! Though the eyebrows are a bit much...

I don't know. I think maybe we just see different things. Antlers, for example. The antlered king from Hellboy obviously spings to mind, and I can see why, looking at the pictures. Maybe it is Guillermo's influence. On the other hand, Guillermo didn't invent the idea of an antlered headdress. In British folkore there's Herne the Hunter, who had antlers, and the Celtic god Cernunnos - and I don't doubt that other cultures have similar. I can also imagine that Weta, in devising cultural references from the Mirkwood elves, might have come up with the idea that since these elves hunt stags in the forest they might well have antlers on the walls... And Thranduil's long blond hair is reminding some people of Lucius Malfoy and some of the prince in Hellboy - but to me it looks like Legolas, who was before either of them. (Not sure who influenced the eyebrows, though).... I'm sure there are Guillermo influences in the designs, and Alan Lee, John Howe, Weta.... but we won't know whose is whose until we see the 'Art of' books and (I hope) EE documentaries. Maybe we won't even know then, but we'll all carry on cheerfully thinking we know!

James and/or Charlotte Pace (Lee's parents).
(Not sure who influenced the eyebrows, though).... Silverlode "Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them. Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you." -On Fairy Stories
