Yes, I got the reference [In reply to] Can't Post

Do you think the lurkers are scratching their heads, and asking themselves "now what are these two laughing about?"

In Reply To

The clearing in the Old Forest; the hill where the wargs attacked; Entmoot.

I actually was reminded of the hobbits sudden waking up next to the standing stone of the Barrow-downs, just as the sun sinks above the fog.

Wolves in the Shire?
Ah, but that's not where Bilbo's cousin heard them! "One of his elder cousins (on the Took side), who had been a great traveller, use to imitate it to frighten him."

Right. But I suspect that Tolkien forgot this when he wrote the latter book - unless, as I suggested...

In Reply To

Woodmen and Beornings.
I've thought these were the same - that in later days, Beorn became their leader, and following traditional nomenclature they came to be called by his name.

So did I. In which case, their migration Northwards does not seem to fit with what we know of the Rohirrim and their Norse relatives - not unless we postulate a few more migrations which Tolkien wrote nothing about.

Interesting, why do you find the similarity of "dvergr" and "tsverg" (zwerg) to be disturbing?

Well, our Dwarves, while far from perfect, are very nice and pleasant.
This similarity strongly suggests the Dwarves of the Book of Lost Tales, but doesn't fit with my image of Gimli.

"In the morning Bilbo misses breakfast. is this the most unbelievable part of this chapter?"
