Plausible, but ... [In reply to] Can't Post

It would have to serve a purpose other than just providing eye candy and it should foreground a significant plot point of the following film;

Gandalf's fight with Balrog hinted that we haven't seen the last of the old wizard and that he may have changed (for the those who hadn't guessed anyway). Smeagol vs Deagol was a great way of explaining the discovery of the ring and the personal conflicts of Smeagol, illustrating his Hobbit heritage and drawing parallels to Frodo's changing personality (all valuable character information).

So ... to see Dale's destruction in flashback we need to learn something of value towards the relationship of Dale to the Dwarves of Erebor - in order to understand more fully why the animosity might have developed - Girion's emerald necklace is found in the Treasure hoard, so perhaps this will provide some connection for his heir Bard and the rightful share of the treasure. Maybe we'll see something of the trade between cultures and the dependence of the Dwarves on Dale groceries and the counter trade of Dwarven weapons and fabulous toys. This will be a useful history lesson to demonstrate the fragile balance of dependence between races and help the audience sympathise with the actions of Dale / Laketown folk in marching an army to threaten our friends the dwarves.

But one thing's for sure we will not see Smaug at the start of Film two ... that would be like seeing the Alien rampage through the Space Jockey’s ship before the crew of the Nostromo wakeup. We may see Smaug in vague glimpses, suggestions or shadows, but not in full attacking, destroying glory. Not before Bilbo's encounter, otherwise the fear and suspense is diluted.

As a flashback at the beginning of film 3 - yes possibly.
