I meant [In reply to] Can't Post

that I thought the trolls turning to stone were from folklore and the Dwarves' names were from the Sagas.

I apologize for not making that clear! :)

Oh! there has been so much discussed, forgive me for picking and choosing. [In reply to] Can't Post

May rainfall and gloomy weather:
just goes to show that Tolkien is writing about England and English Summer weather. :)

Bilbo's character:
At this point we don't really have much to go on- he's cold, wet, hungry, and we don't know what he's capable of yet.

Descriptions:
as mentioned: gorgeous.

LUCK and other magic

Perhaps luck is the workings of the Valar!

Talking purse: totally believable. Want this to be in the films, I think it will be missed.

Gandalf missing the trolls: he probably left at daylight, and passed by there whilst the trolls were still safely in their cave awaiting darkness. (Though how do they know? They can't really open the door and peak!)

Light at the end of the tunnel: it's almost a little freudian. You pass through the birth canal, leaving a safe warm place to be thrust into the light and take on life in all it's joys and challenges.

Hobbit firster, Book firster.

Spooked by Troll-smell! [In reply to] Can't Post

That had never occurred to me before - that the pony could have picked up the slightest odor of Trolls, and freaked out at it!

We'll never know exactly what spooked the pony, but your idea makes perfect sense to me! Smile

(Oh, and yes, feel free to leap right into the discussions, the more the merrier - and as you can see, even us "oldies" still learn a thing or two from "newbies"! Wink And welcome to TORn!)

A talking purse is believable [In reply to] Can't Post

I mean it is in a trolls pocket after all. However the chances that the first time Bilbo tries picking a pocket that there should be a talking purse in there seem quite slim, especially when we had no idea there were such things before hand.

Conversely that a key should fall out of a pocket during a tussle, well that is easier to accept (for me) because we know that such things exist in Middle-earth already.

Interesting take on the light at the end of the tunnel.

Thanks for stopping by TH!

That does make sense, although [In reply to] Can't Post

it doesn't explain the mischief that got into the fire -- although perhaps the rain was enough to do that. And the rain could just be a coincidence -- or not. Tolkien's magic often fits both kinds of explanations, the mundane and the magical.

Thank you so much for the welcome! [In reply to] Can't Post

I really appreciate how kind and welcoming everyone is here!

As you said, we'll never know what really spooked the pony - but sometimes it's fun to theorize or play with ideas. :)

Well [In reply to] Can't Post

In terms of brightness, I would say it might come across stronger when it shines right in your face. Tongue

Apart from that, nothing comes to mind.
