SCOD - Weathered Gimli... Can't Post

Hi everyone! I'm making my SCOD posts a bit earlier this week (as my work schedule and internet access will make it hard later). So here goes!

The Fellowship is at a standstill, and Frodo begins to feel isolated from his comrades. Here we see Gimli.

1.) What do we get from Gimli here? Weariness? Pity? What?

2.) Though brief, is there anything about this shot that stands out to you over any other shots of Gimli?

3.) Any other thoughts/comments?

A sense of shared responsibility [In reply to] Can't Post

is what I got from his body language. He was so determined to go through Moria. He is too gruff to admit how he feels about that (we already saw him in tears as they came out of the mine), but he is worried about Frodo's continued silence and obvious feelings of guilt. He just doesn't know how to approach him, and he can't offer any words of comfort that wouldn't also sound self-serving. He's in an emotional bind and very uncomfortable about it.

The small scene with Boromir after this is my favorite moment for Boromir. "Do not carry the weight of the dead". As a military captain, he has sent men to death and had to find a way to continue. He tries to help Frodo in a straight-forward but gentle manner from his own experience. He's probably the only one who could at that moment, with Aragorn busy elsewhere. I found that very moving. Great writing. Great acting. Excuse me for the digression.

Y'know, I never thought of that... [In reply to] Can't Post

How there's a sort of unsung sense of failure on Gimli's part, that he still tries his best to remain a stern and strong dwarf as any, but the fact is he's done nothing but wrong in his assistance (save for being a great fighter).

My favorite scene in the FOTR EE [In reply to] Can't Post

Happens right after this, and involves Boromir telling Frodo not to feel the blame for Gandalf's death.

It is not only a subtly acted scene, but it is unusually beautiful, in terms of both lighting and composition.

I hope someone posts it!

Hmmm... [In reply to] Can't Post

Between you and Lissuin, I feel obliged to post that cap, but it was included in the same section as the one I've posted. Oh well, maybe next time around, or sooner... who knows. Smile

Does it matter that it's in the same section? [In reply to] Can't Post

Might still be nice to post it. Or, perhaps post it along with a new one from a new section, with an explanatory note?

Perhaps, [In reply to] Can't Post

Still plenty of week to go. I might make a bonus post before long.

Hey, I learned something! [In reply to] Can't Post

I am in the minority, I know, in preferring the TE's to the EE's, so admit I have not paid a lot of attention to the added scenes.

The screencap and replies have helped me to understand what they were going for in this scene, which I never really "got". Thanks everyone!

I saw this scene as being Frodo's POV [In reply to] Can't Post

He looks at the various Fellowship members and they are looking at him with hard to interpret expressions - probably worry or pity for Frodo. But when the camera cuts back to Frodo, he seems to draw into himself as if he is inferring blame or distrust (remember Haldir references the danger Frodo brings) from their looks.

Though brief, is there anything about this shot that stands out to you over any other shots of Gimli?

Gimli is not wearing his helmet! And his hair and make-up are a bit different. As is Legolas's costume. I think this scene was shot early on and PJ & co. decided they didn't quite like the look and made changes.

BTW, I may have gotten the first part from the commentaries. I know I got the second part from it:)

sorry for late reply! [In reply to] Can't Post

1.) What do we get from Gimli here? Weariness? Pity? What?

I'd say a tad of resentment at being in Lothlorien, however some apathy too.

2.) Though brief, is there anything about this shot that stands out to you over any other shots of Gimli?

yeah it does stand out a lot IMO. His ears jutting out, his huge creased forehead, and his top hair actually being visible. Plus I love his Dwarven shoulder armour.

3.) Any other thoughts/comments?

Gimli is awesome ;)

cheers One Ringer

the look and feelings of Gimli son of Gloin [In reply to] Can't Post

It's likely I've not spent much time-- if any-- wondering what Gimli is thinking/feeling here since this is the shot of him that always has me thinking...Whoa! He looks different here! So...there's my question 2 comment Wink
" Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens."--that's Gimli, I think. Wonder if he is thinking about that in this shot.
