“Reading is everything.” Nora Ephron Can't Post

“Reading is everything. Reading makes me feel like I've accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. Reading makes me smarter. Reading gives me something to talk about later on. Reading is the unbelievably healthy way my attention deficit disorder medicates itself. Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it's a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it's a way of making contact with someone else's imagination after a day that's all too real. Reading is grist. Reading is bliss.”

Nora Ephron, I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman

I heard this quote by Nora this morning as the news of her death got reported and discussed. It put me in mind of past and present conversations on these boards and I thought I'd share it.

I'm not sure I was the biggest fan of her movies - I haven't read any of her writing - but I think... from hearing about her and the things she's done and said... that I'd like her. She seemed to be a good friend to have.

I've read a couple of her books [In reply to] Can't Post

And I enjoyed the way she expressed herself. That's a great quote, which really hits the nail on the head.

I'm sorry she's gone Unsure

Do we walk in legends or on the green earth in the daylight?

A man may do both. For not we but those who come after will make the legends of our time. The green earth, say you? That is a mighty matter of legend, though you tread it under the light of day!

Hadn't heard! How sad! [In reply to] Can't Post

I have to say I do love When Harry met Sally and You've Got Mail. So sad Mrs. Ephron is gone. Great quote and so true!

Well, here's to falling in love in a New York autumn stroll in Central Park... as Nora Ephron so aptly taught us!
