I'd like very much to hope you were PJ in disguise, this idea is so good... [In reply to] Can't Post

but I know the man's got WAY too much to do to be hanging out here.

I hope you decide to stay. In lieu of PJ we'll listen to how you would film it. Do you think they'd wait and attach it to the GC movie midway through its run, like they did the trailers for the other two films? We had a discussion a while back about the appropriateness of linking the two properties ( I am not in favor of it) but I'd love to think it would be a way of announcing that The Hobbit is in fact getting made and made right. Despite all the "spite" I'd love to see New Line totally on board, as they were with the Rings.

If New Line was smart ... and they are -- (much as I'm irritated by their behavior in this particular kerfuffle, you gotta admit, keeping that company going for 40 years took skill, savvy and brains) -- they'll move heaven and earth to get some kind of announcement attached to Golden Compass. Why? Because it's just smart marketing. It's absolutely the perfect target demographic. Golden Compass is the only big fantasy movie they've got on their slate right now so it's kind of a no-brainer to link the two franchises. Heck, look at the very first teaser trailer for Golden Compass ... they've been trying to link it to LOTR from the start.

Will that connection help the Hobbit's eventual box office? Probably not. That's too far off yet. Plus, the Hobbit is going to be a box office juggernaut no matter what. But attaching an announcement trailer would certainly boost awareness, not to mention build a little good will toward New Line among the fan community.

Would a Hobbit trailer help the Golden Compass' box office? Well, there's a good chance it would actually. Silly as it sounds, there's actually some precedent for that. Back in 1999 Fox attached the first Star Wars: Episode I trailer to the movie Meet Joe Black ... and that movie's grosses did, in fact, jump. People were so eager to see the trailer on the big screen, they paid $10 bucks to see a movie they didn't care a wit about. (This was before we had any inkling that the new trilogy was going to leave such a pungent stench in its wake, of course. But we were young and foolish and filled with such crazy hopes and dreams!)

Anyhow, when theater owners complained that people were buying tickets, sitting through the trailer ... and then LEAVING before Meet Joe Black even started, Fox then announced that they would play the trailer at the beginning AND the end of the film. And the promise of a second glimpse kept us geeks (yes, grudgingly, I admit that I was there) in our seats through one of the longest and most boring movies ever made!

Remember, New Line needs our business for this movie. They've got a lot riding on the success of Golden Compass. They're hoping that this new trilogy will be a big part of their company's plans (and their bottom line) for the next five or six years. So the more tickets they can sell to Golden Compass the better.

These are not stupid people. You gotta believe that they're going to want to reach out to the fan community in a positive way to help this new franchise along. They need the LOTR crowd. And what better way to draw us in than to give us what we really, really, really want? It's worth it to them, no matter how many zeroes they have to put on PJ's check!

Of course, take ALL of this with a whole shaker of salt. This is just me thinking with my fingertips. I have no inside knowledge whatsoever. These are merely the idle musings of a short, fat, hairy man with little else to do with his afternoon!

But we can dare to dream, can't we?

Heck, my last theatre-viewing of FOTR [In reply to] Can't Post

was purely so that I could see the TT trailer at the end of it. Not that I needed my arm twisted too high mind you...

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

LOL [In reply to] Can't Post

I've never gone that far, Aathua, not even for "Phantom Menace."

Gramma....you have a lot of good ideas there. I MIGHT be able to accept it....I mean, if Fran directed it, that would work! After all, she was responsible for the "lyrical, fairy-tale" stuff, (such as Sam and Frodo in the boat, Arwen and Aragorn in Rivendell TTT) while PJ tended to favor the action scenes. You could say "The Hobbit" is more of a Fran type of film. If the script team was together......PJ has to count for this one though; I'd want all the actors to be getting revised scripts under their door every day like in LOTR, but Peter has to have been kept up to speed and contribute via email. I don'yt know...I'll think on this.

The problem though, , like others have mentioned, is the publicity. Unless the majority of fans see that definative statement "Peter Jackson will be directing"--if they see anyone else in the director's slot--they'll still hit the cieling. And the non-book and non-Internet fans (Joe Sixpack and Jane the Soccer-mom) probably still couldn't name one person on the creative team, unless they watched the Oscars. And some of the anonymous fans might care more than NL thinks.
Bottom line: how are you going to see a non-Jackson directed film to the public and expect the same passionate intensity and anticipation? NL will have alot of work on their hands.

Oh...and re-reading this thread, I had something I wanted to say to Elven yesterday:
Yes, "Dangling Carrots" would be a great name for a band. After all, we've already got the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam:)Evil

This is just...wow. [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm re-reading the Hobbit now and even from Chapter 2, I can tell how difficult this is going to be. I had forgotten just how childish the tine really is--it's a grandpa reading a bedtime story to a 5 yr old. Even the decision on whether any of the story should be told with any voice-over narration (similar to the last scene in ROTK--Frodo "talking" to Sam--will be difficult. I was wrong--the childishness must be preserved through the first half of the book for sure. But even so I am amazed at how the hints of darkness and a deeper take creep into the narrative even from Chapter 1. Gandalf's tale of the imprisonment of Thorin's grandfather in what is undoubtedly Barad-Dur sent shivers up my spine. He could no longer talk or even recognize me"--he was soon to die from torture. And that would have to be told in a flashback. WOW.

It is great fun, so far, to be able to fill in the blanks when Tolkine gives references to the other Stories of ME, "Goblins" "Princesses and widows' sons", Evil castles" "men of the North" etc. We are on the window looking in, but we know more than Bilbo does. I am very glad, for the first time, that LOTR was filmed first---as well as the fact that LOTR was what I read first. To this day I recommend LOTR first, the Hobbit 3rd. Difficult as it will be to write a credible script LOTR this (and it WILL be hard), we can all thank God that LOTR was done first. It makes TH at once all the more easier and more difficult to do.
