I know that Tolkien is not a paleontologist, astronomer, geologist, etc. That's obvious. But I disagree with your inclination to simply sweep such considerations under the rug. You say it's fruitless to worry about such things as the history of the sun and moon. But Tolkien himself is worried about such things. Indeed, he gives us a history of the sun and moon in the Silmarillion. By doing so, doesn't he sort of beg the question. I am more in agreement with Otaku-sempai. Tolkien opened himself up to this line of questioning. If you're going to make up a creation/origins myth and attempt connect it with the present day, you need to explain where/how it fits.
