Locations Can't Post

I'm curious to what we will see in terms of landscape. One of the big differences between the lord of the rings and the hobbit is how much more desriptive the lord of the rings is. Much is left to the imagination of the reader in the hobbit. We have seen a few shots from the production videos already. But there are still many locations we have never seen.

I took a few minutes out of my time to hunt down some pictures of what I think some of the locations in the book could look like.

Entrance to goblin cave
http://ladyley.se/sala/gruvan/grotta.jpg
(I always imagined the entrance to be at the edge of a mountain. Quite high up, just a small entrance with a hidden door inside to their real hideout.)

Beorn's house
http://www.varmland.nu/humletorp/bilder/hum-2.gif
(A wood house at the edge of the forest or possibly inside it. A typical northern hemisphere isolated country house. But of course look older.)

Radagast's house
http://stormtalifero.com/homes/cliffhouse.jpg
(On a high cliff where he will have his birds come and go, not necessarly the design like the house in the image. But more like a birds nest.)

Lonely mountain

(Like this but without the snow and the surrounding landscape should look more dead and flat.)

Mirkwood

(This is perfect in my opinion...)

Can't think of more locations right now, but I'm pretty spot on right?

I really like the idea of what you chose for Radagast's house. It's a cool concept and one that could work very well for the films. It would certainly set it apart from Beorn's house!

I also like the picture for the Lonely Mountain!

The entrance to the goblin cave is probably pretty close to what it will look like in the films as well.

I'll have to search for some pics of some other locations..... this has me thinking!

In some ways I'm more interested in how ME looks, than the action! [In reply to] Can't Post

When JRRT wisked me away to his world 40+ years ago, it was a drama played out in the most fantastic Settings. Leaving me to imagine many of the Landscapes and vistas filled me UP! The way PJ is going about it, is a dream realized.

Similar to him, I find it really hard NOT to Think of MiddleEarth landscapes when I'm in our Colorado Rocky Mountains. I grew up in front of Pikes Peak, NOW that is a Lonely Mountain. Since 1967, my version(vision) of this world is colored by his words.

"New Zealand landscapes, your STAR is rising in the West TWICE again..." xoxoOLD guy.

I'm with you Bombadil! [In reply to] Can't Post

I've spent the majority of my adult life (up to this point) in Colorado (colorado springs too!), Utah and Montana. I first read LOTR and The Hobbit in El Paso, TX where I grew up. I had a hard time picturing the majesty of the landscapes of Middle Earth until I had a reference point. After reading them several times as an adult, with my new perspective gained from living in some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, I find my ability to visualize has been enhanced and therefore the reading experience as well.

I find that as I drive I look at landscapes and say (silently) to myself "that's a perfect Misty Mountains, or River Anduin or Shire, etc..." as I view this amazing landscape.

Thanks Dude!.... [In reply to] Can't Post

there are places just in Colorado that if it possible would be outstanding Backgrounds for many scenes, but of course also that could be said of Ireland, Wales, the Lake District of northern England, PacificNorthwest Canada, the temparate Rainforests of the Olymic pennisula of Washington and Oregon...and on and on. BUT, it is a Total pleasure that it is being shot in NZ! The Last place on Earth that Tolkien could ever had visited.

If you have ever climbed near timberline in Colorado,(11,250 ft above sea level) things, trees, shrubs shrink in size to survive. Like downsizing to make it through tough winters. As a skier most of my life, there is even a glade for skiing in Monarch Ski Area called "Mirkwood!" Elsewhere in our 26 Major ski areas, usually there is some reference to JRRT's MiddleEarth. Which goes to show you his influence over many people all over the World, even while thinking of nameing ski run?

Whenever I do travel, I get flashes in my head that "Wow, how MiddleEarth is THAT!" JRRT effected me so much, that the way, that I look at World sometimes through His Eyes.

"This World owes a big Debt of Graditude to Tolkien for helping start EarthDay, and the whole ecological movement, in my mind"

I wonder [In reply to] Can't Post

Where they will find large pine forests on new zeeland. Are there any at all, sometimes I wonder how much better or worse the movies would look if they would be shot in a nordic hemisphere landscape. (Russia, Scandinavia, Canada etc.)

The landscapes in the lord of the rings are huge and majestic, I would like to see more trollish dark landscape. Something some people here might not understand since you are from other parts of the world. Let me describe it with a movie clip.

New Zealand has pines [In reply to] Can't Post

These plenty of pine, but mainly in commercial plantations and rarely older then 25 years. So not the most natural looking.. but they would be okay for landscape shots.

These also older pine forests, plenty of conifers selection really.

Agreed [In reply to] Can't Post

I always thought a Northern European or Northern European-esque landscape would be best, with variations between the North and South of Middle Earth (Shire - England; Misty Mountains/Erebor - Scandinavia; Rohan - German/Polish plain; Gondor - Northern Italy). But New Zealand is a much cheaper place to film, with a more compact set of varying landscapes, so it is quite ideal. But yeah, the LOTR films always look a little "Pacific" to me, which doesn't fully gel. A minor point, I suppose, but a significant point for some.

NZ Locations [In reply to] Can't Post

While Tolkien certainly may have had European regions in mind (He did visit the Black Forest - inspiration for Mirkwood) NZ has a wide range of terrain. Its not 'Pacific' as much of the original flora is 'ancient' i.e. from the dinosaur era due to NZ's isolation.

NZ has its own lonely mountain in Mt Taranaki / Egmont ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Taranaki ) but I suspect it would only be used as a background merged into a more appropriate foreground such as Laketown and the vale which is the site of the Battle of the Five Armies which PJ was possibly discussing in his video blog.

Honestly I think that the Lonely Mountain will be a Biggature! [In reply to] Can't Post

Maybe BIG enough to pre-plan their shots. Also, the Ability to control the Lighting, ... probably a variety sets like the Hidden door, the Front gate that the dwarves sorta Barricaded up..

Smaug's Chambers piled high with jewels, Gold coins, etc. is gunna be the BIGgest thrill for me, his BIG voice echoing through the Mountain is gunna many people's Spine's tingle.....BIG smoke and/or fire shooting out... illuminating the Huge walls, sprarkle..ing the Pile in 3D is gunna Knock us dead...

I'm thrilled, now if I can just keep breathing until I see H2, you can take me out back, and shoot me full of arrows.

G'day Scot! [In reply to] Can't Post

Unfortunately, PJ's media person confirmed a couple of months ago that the Lonely Mountain will be entirely CG - no actual location will be used.

And welcome to TORN! :)

I agree [In reply to] Can't Post

I would prefer seeing middle earth in northern European landscape like it was intended. New Zeeland feels too open to me. Look at this short video. Wouldn't that kind of landscape be ideal for many of the shots in the hobbit?

I think they're going for a shape that they can't replicate in New Zealand. [In reply to] Can't Post

Rather than the typical, Mt. Fuji looking cone, I would prefer and huge, rather narrow and more rough looking mountain that towers into the sky.

I'm thinking its also down to the scenery around the mountain.... [In reply to] Can't Post

The big volcano's on the north Island are either surounded by lava/ash wilderness or productive green farmland. We saw in the production video that PJ was scouting lake Pukaki and I don't see what that can be for besides the Long Lake which very much fits into my image of the location.

That to me seems the most obvious "new" New Zealand landscape that could be used in the films, we saw alot of grassland in Rohan of course but in the rainshadow of the higher southern alps things are a bit drier.

Shape of Lonely Mountain [In reply to] Can't Post

With use of CG / Matte techniques, off course PJ may use Tolkien's own picture of the mountain as used on the jacket cover of my 70th Anniversary edition of The Hobbit. This shows a very tall and spire like peak but possibly too stylised - but does have snow on it !
This picture also reinforces the worm like nature of Smaug
