Except to do the things that he can do and when 'the way' seems blocked to look for another way - NEVER to give up. It took me nine tries at college and 29 years after HS graduation, but I got my Bachelor's. It's taken a divorce and some terrible things to get me back into school for my MBA but I'm here. The only times a person is beaten are when they ALLOW themselves to be or are dead.
The nice thing about Hahvahd and Smith is they're essentially very well-connected fraternities - once you're in you're pretty well set for life from the very affluent connexions that going to such schools provides. The cost of going there is so drastically offset by those connexions and opportunities that it's actually a basement-bargain to go there.
All that said, I'm the poster-boy for the Pennsylvania Deutsch expression, "A man grows too soon old, and too late smart!"

Yeah, I can relate to the family history of alcholism, though in mine it's not severe but more like 'if they viewed it then like they do now surely there'd be a large contingent of my family amongst the diagnosed' sort of thing and in any case I simply prefer to avoid potential problems when I see 'em. Besides, like most vices it's expensive!

to address the cost of Penn State tuition. I knew it was awful, but, d*yyyyyyy*m!, it's just been declared the worst for a state school. There are better bargains at great private schools.

Which in my neck of the woods was rapping smartly upon one's "noggin" with the knuckles. There was also the "Dutch-rub", which was using the same fist but rather than rapping the noggin one applied the fist to the hair portion of the head and vigourously "rubbed" back and forth quickly enough to be uncomfortable w/the friction caused! hehehe Good memories both giving (and now that it's far enough removed) receiving such kidly pleasures!
