Pipe Smoking Can't Post

As we all know, the smoking of pipes figures into the tales of Middle Earth quite a bit. Terms like "Longbottom Leaf" and "Old Toby" conjure images of dark forests with dwarves huddled around a campfire with great plumes of smoke encircling their bearded heads. Or great old wizards blowing smoke rings into the darkening sky, smoking pipes longer than a fuzzy-toed hobbit.

Regardless, I'm curious as to how many "irl" pipesmokers we have here at TORn. I've been smoking a pipe for a few years and loving every minute of it, so I'm curious about what my fellow citizens of Middle Earth smoke. As in, what kind of pipe and what kind of tobacco.

Let us hear it, TORn! Express your love (or in some cases, hate) for tobacco pipe smoking here!

The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it.

Hmm [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, I don't smoke - I really dislike when people smokes when standing next to me as it not only affects them but also me (second hand smoking). I get dizzy by the smoke.

I love when they smoke pipes in LOTR, though (especially Gandalf). It just seems...right.

I'm sorry pipes are just cool. If I was a guy (and a bit older) I'd probably think about smoking one. Wink
A friend of a friend is now smoking one because of Tolkien and can blow smoke rings!
haha yeah unhealthy, but cool

Sorry in advance, [In reply to] Can't Post

for what I am going to say.

My ex-husband smoked a pipe -- do you notice the past tense? He died at age 58 from lung cancer that metastized. His tonsils swelled up and closed off his throat. From what my daughter said, it wasn't pleasant. You may see smoking a pipe as cool, but dying of cancer isn't!

Well... I did try the pipe many years ago... [In reply to] Can't Post

*counts on fingers* About 37 years ago for a few tries. And the other pipe I ventured into for a brief period of time in the 70s is one that I won't talk about here ;) That was about 40 years ago, but I haven't practiced either one since. I can see the attraction, but I just never got the bug to continue. Now thumb-sucking is a whole other topic ;)

Same here, and I actually can get petit mals as a result. Tobacco allergy+ mild seizure disorder+ any kind of tobacco smoke = not nice, so people smoking in public is a bit of a pet peeve with me. If they want to smoke in the privacy of their own homes and when they're not around kids or strangers, then it's all good. I do have loved ones who smoke, so I can understand how addictive it is.

I smoke a pipe occassionally.... [In reply to] Can't Post

I currently have two types of tobacco....both were gifts and I'm actually struggling to get through them. I have no idea the brand names of either, as they were packaged in baggies without a brand name. One is a chocolate smelling/tasting tobacco, the other is a hazelnut scent. Why I was given these two tobaccos? I don't really know for sure. I suppose because I am a chocolate fan, but it really never dawned on me to smoke it in a pipe.
Cigars and pipes I really, really like the smel of. Cigarettes I am not fond of at all. I have a normal looking pipe but am in the market to buy a functional pipe that looks like a pipe from M-E. Most I've come across are decorative only.

What's the matter, James? No glib remark? No pithy comeback?"

They certainly did in "the Hobbit" [In reply to] Can't Post

Here is the first mention of dwarves pipesmoking that I could find in "the Hobbit":

(this is after they have eaten at Bilbo's house and cleaned up the dishes, all while singing nonetheless!)

"Then they went back, and found Thorin with his feet on the fender smoking a pipe. He was blowing the most enormous smoke-rings, and wherever he told one to go, it went - up the chimney, or behind the clock on the mantelpiece, or under the table, or round and round the ceiling; but wherever it went it was not quick enough to escape Gandalf."

Because Gandalf would send a smaller smoke ring to chase down Thorin's.

The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it.

I have a meerschaum pipe that I enjoy. [In reply to] Can't Post

My then-fiance gave it to me for a birthday present. Great gift! It's short to medium length, curved in a "Sherlock" style. The stem appears to be blown glass of some sort, yellow and white in color. The two colors swirl and intertwine. The base is still mostly white, although as time has passed the color is gradually changing to a dark yellow. The bottom of the base is a simple bell shape, however the top third is intricately carved with mini elephants (or oliphaunts, if you prefer) and loops, leafed ropes and designs.

I only take it out every month or so, mainly because living in Minnesota doesn't provide for much time outdoors. A thousand curses be upon you, Old Man Winter. When I do get outside on a pleasant summer evening, a peaceful smoke is pleasant. My wife doesn't care for tobacco so I'm usually alone, but on occasion I'll find myself with a friend or two to share a pipe with. Oddly, I occasionally have an urge, when smoking a pipe, to don a velvet robe and speak profound sayings in a British accent, such as, "Two plus two equals four! Brilliant!"

There's a local smoke shop in St Paul, Minnesota called Stogies on Grand. I prefer their "Stogies Blend," a mostly aromatic mixture.

What about you, Lob?

Got Necroquestions? I'll give you Necromanswers.

I don't know about you, but the name "Farmer Maggot" would deter me away from his produce faster than those guard dogs of his. Farmer Maggot, seriously? I'd much rather thieve from the likes of a Farmer Tastytaters or Farmer Sweetcorn. How about old Farmer McDonald? I'm lovin' it.

Virginias [In reply to] Can't Post

As I mentioned in my first post, I've been smoking a pipe for a few years, but I've only recently begun to "take it serious." As in, buying nice pipes and exploring the world of artisan tobaccos.

Right now, I'm loving a tobacco called "Hal O the Wynd" smoked out of my Peterson System 309 p-Lip Rustic pipe.

The "Hal O the Wynd" is blended in Scotland out of, mostly, Virginia tobaccos. I love it.

But, I'll smoke anything out of anything. I have several corn cob pipes that I smoke occasionally, none of which cost over $10 (cobs are good for a number of reasons, which I won't bore everyone with here). I also will enjoy "drug store blend" tobaccos, when the mood is right for it (for instance, I have a giant can of Captain Black).

The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it.

Tolkien's tobacco [In reply to] Can't Post

There was an article on Pipe smoking in middle-earth some time ago, in the specialist magazine _Pipes and Tobaccos (Winter 2001). 'Pipe smoking' says the article 'emerges in the trilogy as a symbol of light and warmth and is associated with moral goodness'.

Tolkien liked a pipe, as we all know. There is something in the letters column about which brands he enjoyed; apparently he was fond of Cavendish; and Players Navy Cut, as well as Blue Capstan.

Only on the weekends... [In reply to] Can't Post

after a hefty dinner is most enjoyable. I have a handcarved pipe that used to belong to my grandfather and was given to me by my father. Not sure what kind of wood it's carved out of, but it's a very standard straight carving about 8 inches long. I usually buy tobacco from a local cigar shop that sells a cherry blend. I'll also keep a Davidoff cigar in the house at most times which I only allow myself to enjoy on the weekends as well. I would add to the sentiments of several in this thread who can't stand to smoke or smell cigarettes .

I often think of Professor Tolkien when I strike the match for my pipe.

I would really like to buy a handcarved "Gandalf" type pipe like the one Sam is smoking in my pic, but the last time I looked up the price of an official LOTR handcarved pipe, it was in the $500 dollar range. A bit out of the price range for something I only spend a few minutes with on the weekend.Smile

*mods up* [In reply to] Can't Post

From the time I was a little girl I was fascinated with pipe-smoking (in my wilder moments I think it might be a past-life memory), but I've never been tempted to try it, because my dad has terrible asthma that put him in the hospital several times in his younger days, when colleagues would smoke around him. And then there was the danger you describe. Ugh.

After LotR came out, I bought a pipe which I would fill with fresh herbs (mint or sage or thyme) and sip unlit, just tasting the flavor of the herbs. Haven't done that in many years, but it was kind of fun at the time. Fortunately my husband is used to my oddities and didn't laugh at me. Though if I'd lit it, I'm sure he would have had a thing or two to say.

Interesting. I don't know anyone who smokes a pipe. [In reply to] Can't Post

And I only know one person who smokes cigars. I did have an ancient Polish great-aunt when I was little who smoked a pipe, but it was a home made pipe, from what I remember. I have no idea what she smoked in it, though.

I live in the Austin, TX area and the smoking nazis just banned smoking in all public places, including parks. If the stuff is so bad, why don't they make it illegal? Well, we know why, don't we precious. Too much money at stake for the politicians.Unimpressed

Enjoy your pipe while you still can!

Affordable LOTR-looking pipes... [In reply to] Can't Post

... that are functional!!!

I know a few people who have tried these pipes and I've heard mixed reviews. Most of the people who don't like them are kinda pipe snobs, though.

Anyway, they look really cool and are, apparently, fully functional as a tobacco smoking apparatus.
