I have an idea . . . Can't Post

I can't help but think, and I really did try not to think about it and failed, that somebody (or several somebodies) should organize and update a website about Tolkien collectibles. Chances are it already exists, but it really ought to be a feature on TORn somewhere.

All such projects take great time and effort, but it would be lovely to have a comprehensive list, or as close to it as possible, of all LOTR/Hobbit/Tolkien collectibles produced. I envision it being listed by subject and breaking down into ever smaller subjects with smallish photos when one narrows a subject down to a specific item.

If anybody knows of the website, PLEASE share. If nobody knows of the website, PLEASE volunteer!

EXAMPLE:

The Lord of the Rings
A. LOTR book-based collectibles
I. LOTR books published
* Editions published in the UK
* Editions published in the US
* Editions published in non UK Europe
* etc. . .
2. LOTR replicated Middle-earth items
* Swords
* Rings
3. LOTR character reproductions
* 3D character reproductions
- Aragorn
+ Matel's Ken Doll Aragorn (with photo)
- Bilbo
+ Franklin Mint's procelin Bilbo Baggins (with photo)
* Merchandise reporductions
- Frodo
+ 1973 Frodo lunch box with Samwise thermos (with photo)

B. LOTR movie-based collectibles
1. LOTR action figures, dolls and statues
* Burger King FOTR figures, 2000
+ Listed by character (with photos)
* Toy Biz action figure line
+ Listed by character (with photos)
* Sideshow Collectibles

By the Gates of Gondor if anybody read this far I apologize!

There's The Tolkien Collector [In reply to] Can't Post

http://www.tolkiencollector.com

But it's not very comprehensive and doesn't get into the Sideshow universe. Many of the pages are basically links to search Amazon and Ebay.

it does have a link to Shire Radio, an all-Tolkien internet "radio" station that I like.

For retail sites, http://www.tolkientown.com has a fun selection of LOTR merchandise for sale, but it's not a collectors site as such.

Pretty good! [In reply to] Can't Post

The scope of the site is giant but the presentation on the Burger King toys is great!

That is a site I will keep my eye on but in the Tolkien universe, there is yet much to be done.

Thanks!

I might be confused... [In reply to] Can't Post

  • are you looking for a comprehensive list of different sorts of Tolkien collectibles
  • are you looking for links to sites that provide comprehensive information about certain types of collectibles - in order to either list on a resource page or mine for information for a more overarching Tolkein website
  • are you looking for a particular website that already exists but you've lost track of (you say, "if anyone knows of *the* website...")

I thought you were looking for the second... but if not, you'll need to clarify the goal for me. (because... I am a Magpie. It is in my nature to collect... and then I collect info on the things I collect.)

It depends [In reply to] Can't Post

IF there is already a comprehensive list of Tolkien collectibles available on a website then I want to know where it is. I don't know of one, but the web is a big place and I wondered if somebody had already built one.

If not, then I wish somebody would organize one and I wish it would be built and included as part of TORn. I think it would be a valuable part of any comprehensive website (which is what TORn tries to be) about LOTR.

I don't have time to do it myself, but it would be an excellent and admirible project to tackle if somebody was interested in doing it.

Did that help? Cool

backs warily away in case I seem to be volunteering for something.

But, as an interim measure, we could accumulate a list of resources here... in this thread (which is kind of where I thought we were going with this). It's never dead and searchable.

Nah, I know you aren't signing up for anything but the idea of putting a lot of that info in this thread is a very good one. This "room" in the new house will not be much used and it would be a great starting point. Post away I say!

Hmmmmmm [In reply to] Can't Post

Interesting. I only know of a few places that are really specific to some of the collectibles. www.thegd.com has a very complete list of all the Toybiz figures (and I believe the play along ones as well...though it's been a while since I visited). I know that there are some other lists elsewhere of all the sideshow/weta pieces produced (though some of those sites seem to be mainly dedicated to current collectible pricing for them). I'll keep my eye out for other sites. But I think in the end there's really no, one site dedicated to just that. Though it would nice (though HUGE when you factor in everything offically avaliable since the books publication and foriegn collectibles that never made their way to the states).

Frodo also, as far as the goblets go. [In reply to] Can't Post

I still have the "ring of characters" from Burger King on a shelf in my living room, and have served wine in the goblets at various LOTR parties, including the Oscar parties I had for FoTR and TTT. I unfortunately wasn't able to celebrate RoTK with friends, but still had a celebratory glass of wine out of the Frodo goblet. I look back fondly at the time before FoTR when my friends and I were suddenly quite young and searching every BK in the area to get our collections complete!! and I live in the middle of proverbial nowhere.

p.s. diedye: pardon the intrusion, but I have followed your digestive woes on the old board and am wondering if Crohn's Disease is ruled out? I wasn't diagnosed until I was 19, but am (very unwillingly) learning to deal with it, approaching 10 years now. just curious.

I haven't been able to find a doctor... [In reply to] Can't Post

... who gives a damn enough to want to do extensive tests. They've all just dismissed it away as IBS and are not interested in taking it any further.

I have discovered something, though... the problems seem to start in my stomach. They told me it was acid reflux, but since it inevitably leads to an IBS attack, I'm thinking my stomach is the source of my problems. I'm going to try to convince a GP to send me to a specialist that deals with stomach problems... let's hope he listens.

Thanks for the suggestion. Smile

That is so interesting... [In reply to] Can't Post

as I said in another thread, I collected the U.S. ones (went into quest mode for a couple of weeks there). I am so glad I didn't know about the alternate country ones (particularly the Singapore ones cause I would have been trying to get them. I wonder if anyplace other than e-bay has them now? I'll bet THOSE are the ones that, as time goes by will fetch the highest price of all the B.K. toys.

You do not know your danger!! [In reply to] Can't Post

I really love the idea of a Tolkien collectibles site! I get what you're going for... and I've got quite a list of my own already from collecting things since the early 1970s. I've even got table tents from Burger King and a BK LotR crown!!! Kinder Toys, kites, popcorn buckets, magnets, books, Sideshow, NZ stamps... we could go nuts.

I'm horrible HORRIBLE at keeping things straight. I'm about as organized as fallen leaves on a windy day... but I'd be happy to start a list of things people have and putting the items into subjects and breaking them down... so it'd look like an outline for a report, essentially... or a family tree :)

I think a place here on TORn... maybe a link off this site. Or we can stick it in with the Observations Lists site. DON'T HAVE TO... but another page of it's own is an alternative until it gets more developed.

Yeah... I've also wondered if there was a site out there of what's been available, and for a collection by US to be developed would be fun :)

This WILL happen Gma! [In reply to] Can't Post

I will either put this site together on my own or as part of TORn, more likely as part of the bigger whole.

So, if you want to start getting your list together, feel free. We will need photos too eventually, internet sized at 300 px wide, but gatherin information would be great.

This would hopefully be tackled by more than one person but anything to get us started is excellent!

It really needs to be done for the greater good! Evil

What if we had a permanent thread for collecting information... [In reply to] Can't Post

The topic would be LOTR comprehensive collectible list or something.

Then under that thread, someone could make a post with a subject head delineating a particular sort of collectible, i.e. Burger King toys. Either in that post or in posts in that subthread, would be info regarding BK toys. It could be info we write/provide or links to sites that provide it. That information could sit there until someone deals with it in regards to the finished product-whether that be posted on TORn or at gramma's site.

That way, people could plop new information down when they get the chance or when they run across it. And people might make it their mission or take the responsibility for researching certain products (like Toy Biz figures) or subsets of collectibles (like editions of books).

The thread would remain active but become buried unless pinned. That would be an issue the moderators would have to decide. I know they're shying away from too many pinned threads. But we could put the url of the buried thread in footers or perhaps we could just have on pinned thread in each area that allows us to post urls of buried but active/ongoing threads.

Hope that made some sense. I could contribute some amount of information to this project and think it's a great idea. If advertised well, I think it would be a real asset to TORn site in general.

I think [In reply to] Can't Post

that's a great idea! Since the listing would be an ongoing project having it pinned would work the best.

Now, to convince a mod. Hmmmmm. I have chocolate somewhere, maybe that would sweeten the deal. Sly

Chocolate? [In reply to] Can't Post

I have it on good authority that a bottle of rum and a 12 pack of coke might sway Altaira a bit. Angelic

I like the idea very much and it might have the side benefit of giving some life to the collecting forum, which really can shine in this new format. From the info gathered, open to contribution, we can eventually roll it to a proper web page.

Great Plan! Especially about the part of putting Altaira to work. She's just been sitting around lately ;)

I think once we get this humming along, announcements to the other boards would be a good idea. I only stumbled in here because of a reference in one of the posts on Main. I thought of this more as a "gaming" board rather than having to do with "collections". I think this activity and awareness will change it from "Gaming and Collecting" to "Collecting and Gaming"!!

My garage roof done the Fall of 2013 [In reply to] Can't Post

gramma's garage roof slideshow

This is the story of the old Bag's End

and it's garage

where hobbity lives. It all started when I needed to repair

the hole raccoons chewed.

I could fit through it! 2 ft by just over 1 ft.

I found rotted wood, so I checked further along

the whole length of the garage. Found the same damage

on both sides of the garage.

I really needed to replace all the old damaged shingles, but it's pretty expensive.

So I scavenged 7 different colors and shapes of damaged bundles of shingles from stores. I was going to do a patchwork pattern over the whole roof. Then I thought about what else I could do with the colors, and made

this sketch

A job like this needs deluxe tools

I started trying to layout the shingles to get an idea of what would happen,

but decided to just started hammering

I kept adding shingles

brown shingles create a road that goes ever on across the roof.

A shadow sometimes loomed over the Ol' Bag's End

Soon leaves started falling

I cut hinges out of some black shingles, and the window/door trim from brown.

A post knob become door knob

Here's the finished door

Then shrubbery grew up one side

and down the other

We needed windows

then started a topper

that also has shrubbery

Every hobbit hole needs a proper chimney

and a Party Tree

Silver water came from the grey rain-curtain that turned to silver glass

Here it is! As far as it goes until Spring and warm weather for more tweeking

A closer look.

another angle

and another

looking towards the house

A shot of all

Here's a draft of the red dragon I'm making from shingles indoors during the Winter, and will add in the Spring

Shingles are a serious emery board

The roof goes along with my dragon bush (see first picture), Tolkien symbol on the house roof & flet

Here's a closeup of the Tolkien symbol with my wristwatch next to it for scale.

The symbol and dragon's back

The flet when being built by my Brother.

Thanks for looking!

Sincerely, grammaboodawg
