and a heck of a lot to read through! Well done on compiling it all, Inferno. *sits back to read*

WOW!! Just. Wow. All right, I know from the internet archive (the Wayback Machine) which has a few of the old Torn board pages saved, that "The Land of Shadow" chapter discussion was taking place during the week of April 17, 2001. Did you all do these in one-week chunks, like we do now? If so, then they started about 1 year (or??54 weeks) prior to that, in April 2000, on Main. The first chapter discussion to appear in the RR (using that timetable) would have been sometime in June, 2000? What a treasure. Now they are searchable. I live in hopes that someone, somewhere has the other chapters saved. One can dream. Thanks for all that, Inferno! Now I remember why I always set my personal settings (as opposed to the board settings) to read posts backwards. I always hated that upside-down way (newest posts on top) which seemed counterintuitive to the threaded mode used to display them. It was possible to change that, if you chose to do so, and I was in the minority. I learned to refer to a "post up the board" when on my screen it was a "post down the board". But I had an easier time making the transition here, than did others who had never viewed their threads this way. Ah. Memories. I'm getting overwhelmed by them, this weekend! a.s.

The first LOTR discussion was indeed conducted at a rate of one chapter per week, so I'd estimate a start date of March 20, 2000 (including two weeks off over the 2000-2001 holidays). Until last night, the first LOTR discussion was accessible –in part– in two different locations: 1. As Inferno describes, discussions from Bk. I, Ch. 7 to Bk. VI, Ch. 4 (except I.10, V.3, and V.10) were saved elsewhere on TORN by Gorel. That section of the site seems to have been lost when the server crashed in 2007. However, the entire set had long since been copied by the Internet Archive – unlike TORN's old forums, the rest of the site was accessible to search engines. And now, thanks to Inferno’s efforts, this archive has now been copied to the new Reading Room. 2. Discussions from Bk. IV, Ch. 8 to App. F, and the free discussion on the entire book, are still accessible in the old Reading Room itself, where all threads remain, dating back to January 2001 (earlier material seems to have been purged at some point). Note that there is some overlap with Gorel’s archive, so that all that remains missing are seven chapters from book one: chapters 1-6 and 10 from the first book. These original threads, like Gorel’s archive, also can be accessed via the index created last year, which is linked from Altaira’s welcome thread above (and my footer).

Where is the "Gorel archive"? When you say: As Inferno describes, discussions from Bk. I, Ch. 7 to Bk.
My emphasis. By "entire set", do you mean it is possible somehow to see the first chapter posts from that discussion (the chapters prior to "In The House of Tom B", which is where the Lasselanta archives begin)? Or by "the entire set" do you mean the "entire" set of discussions that are accessible via the Wayback Machine's copy of the Lasselanta site (which Inferno has now copied to Torn)? You are a treasure, NEB. When technology advances to this degree, we will have to put a link directly to your brain up as a sticky in the RR. Would be a lot easier. At least, for us!! LOL a.s.

Sorry. By "entire set" I meant only Gorel's wonderful Lasselanta archive of the first LOTR discussion, originally hosted on another part of TORN, subsequently saved by the Wayback Machine, and now copied to the RR by Inferno, where the content is accessible to TORN's search function. Wonderful but sadly incomplete. Seven chapters are still MIA, and seven more plus the appendices are accessible only thread-by-thread using the link in my footer.

The party has been emotional for me, but never so much as now. I saved the Reading Room for last, and here indeed lay the best surprise of all. I have so longed to visit these old posts from the beginning days. Any idea what time period this discussion covered? I notice with warm nostalgia that UT and I traded a few hugs so it must be after early 2001. It could not have been before March of 2000 because that’s when I made my first post ever on the boards, and the Reading Room did not exist until some time after I joined. Thank you again. I've saved this in my documents and will always treasure it.

This was quite the treat! Lots of names I've heard of and interesting to read their words here....in the long ago, when the RR was new... Thanks so much for digging this up and reprising them!

I know I'm getting to this thread a bit late, but I just wanted to thank Inferno for posting it. These were definitely the good old days of the RR. Reading my contribution to the thread reminds me how much more tightly-wound I was back then, and how sure I was I knew it all. It's a surprise this lot has tolerated me all these years.
Out of the darkness of my life, so much frustrated, I put before you the one great thing to love on earth: the Blessed Sacrament... There you will find romance, glory, honour, fidelity, and the true way of all your loves on earth, and more than that: Death: by the divine paradox, that which ends life, and demands the surrender of all, and yet by the taste (or foretaste) of which alone can what you seek in your earthly relationships (love, faithfulness, joy) be maintained, or take on that complexion of reality, of eternal endurance, which every man's heart desires. --J.R.R. Tolkien, Letter #43, to his son Michael
