Because Elrond raised him. [In reply to] Can't Post

Rivendell was the capital of all lore, of all peoples, as much as Elrond could gather it. And unlike a mortal, Elrond could remember first-hand when athelas mattered very much indeed.

Life is beautiful and dangerous! Beware! Enjoy!

I've heard [In reply to] Can't Post

that the flavor of hand-blended teas can be affected by the body chemistry of the person creating the blends, so only certain people are allowed to do it in Chinese cultures. Can't let them leave a bad taste in the mouth! Based on that kind of reasoning, athelas in the hands of another may not smell so sweet, or be so useful and effective.

I've never expected Elrond or any other Elf-healer to use herbs [In reply to] Can't Post

I've always thought it was their "magic" for lack of a better word and not the practical medicine they used Crazy I can relate Aragorn's calling back the spirit of a man to his Elvish education but I would connect the herbs usage with his human predecessors.

Thanks Guys [In reply to] Can't Post

Knew there were important dates, times of year, phase of moon etc in druidic lore, but wasn't certain about shamanic.

Love connections like these between supposedly different groups.

Always thought it was both [In reply to] Can't Post

A bit of this special magic, yes, but why should the Elves not use herbs? They had all the time in the world to find out how they work best, and their 'magic' might have been able to enhance the effect of some herbs.
And I think to use only 'magic' when you have lots of patients (after a battle, e.g.) would be pretty draining for the healer. Why not save his energy for the bad cases and treat the lighter injured with herbs?

I do not suffer from LotR obsession - I enjoy every minute of it.

Oh, that's really fascinating! [In reply to] Can't Post

'Though I can't tell if Tolkien knew that, it's fascinating in itself. Never heard of that - will have to think about it. Thanks, Dreamdeer!

Just my feeling [In reply to] Can't Post

I personally imagine Elrond waving hands around the head of the wounded instead of holding spoon and a cup but it may be my warm feeling towards this character, who knows Tongue Seriously, I just don't imagine the "mighty healers" of this race making herbal tea but they may have done it very well indeed. No way to find out for sure though. At least, I don't recall Tolkien comments on anything close to this... He may have commented, I haven't read even half of his works Blush

That is something [In reply to] Can't Post

that everyone can imagine as s/he likes, I think. There are facts you can't argue about - that Arwen was Elrond's daughter, e.g. - but others are never to be explained (*cough* do Balrogs have wings? *cough*) for sure, and then we are free to imagine them as we like. But it's still fun to talk about it and to know how others think about it Smile
