I should have added this link on my last post, so here it is [In reply to] Can't Post

As you can see, this day was long anticipated...

One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them.
In the Land of Mordor were the Shadows lie.

"And thither we are going against my wish. Who will lead us now in this deadly dark?" - Boromir, ‘A Journey in the Dark’.

Same here. [In reply to] Can't Post

I just don't bother to read them. Life is too short, and these boards are supposed to be fun, not work.

Oh, my! [In reply to] Can't Post

Shocked I missed that post when you first put it up. It's a little--scary and amazing--to be the subject of prophecy.

I should do a search on my nickname and see what else people have said about me. What fun!

Thanks for the link Smile

I've never done that before. I've missed some interesting stuff. People here sure are sweet :-) I recommend that excercise to other people. You never know what people might be saying about you, and in a great group like this, it's bound to be worth reading.

So is there a corresponding female word? [In reply to] Can't Post

Or are we just known as a cranky b***h?

how about mossback? [In reply to] Can't Post

It means an "extremely conservative or old-fashioned person".

It seems kind of gender neutral to me though, so maybe it's an all purpose descriptor...

Six, here! [In reply to] Can't Post

I always fall way behind during live chats or when I'm instant messaging because I can't help myself; I have to use actual words and sentences. I do use "lol," (and it's variations), "brb" and "imho" fairly regularly, especially when chatting live, but that's about the extent of it. I don't find most of the shortcuts cute or useful, just annoying. If that makes me a curmudgeon, then so be it!

hmm. My American Heritage Dictionary says: [In reply to] Can't Post

An ill-tempered person full of resentment and stubborn notions. Origin unknown.

And the Compact Oxford English Dictionary (which can be searched online) says:

curmudgeon

rmujn/

noun a bad-tempered or surly person.
— DERIVATIVES curmudgeonly adjective.
— ORIGIN of unknown origin.

However, I agree that "cranky b***h works, too.

LOL

"an seileachan"

Some say once you're gone, you're gone forever, and some say you're gonna come back.
Some say you'll rest in the arms of the Savior, if sinful ways you lack.
Some say that they're coming back in a garden: bunch of carrots and little sweet peas.
I think I'll just let the mystery be.

I based my reply on an old Isaac Asimov comment. [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't remember the context (it was in one of his famous science essays), but he made the gender-specific reference to the word.

Of course, in today's PC world, God forbid (oops, better not reference a deity) anything be gender-specific.
