A new expression...not! Can't Post

In the short story “Make-Up for Murder” by Thomas King, published in “Spicy Detective Stories”, November 1935, I found the following:

Lips curling back from large even teeth, he said, “Because in a moment I’m going to pull that letter knife from her and give it a new sheath in your throat.”

Nice lad...not! I stared up at him. “I believe you’re nuts”

Ah, the vanity of youth, thinking they’ve come up with something new under the sun.

I met a Balrog on the stair
He had some wings that weren't there.
They weren't there again today.
I wish he would just fly away.

THAT is where Jar Jar got it [In reply to] Can't Post

"Exsqueeeeze me!"

Thinking about that just gave me heartburn.

No wonder all writers want to direct: one still has to put up with a load of nonsense, but even if wearing two hats (writer and director), there is one under which one is not called a thief and then raped.

Nice find, Darkstone. [In reply to] Can't Post

Here's another for you: The habit in some modern American dialects of pronouncing "ask" as a homonym of "axe" -- i.e. as though spelt "aks": it's no modern innovation, but rather a survival from Middle English -- the form "aks" is well-attested in fourteenth century texts.

plus ca change . . . [In reply to] Can't Post

I am a dreamer of words, of written words. I think I am reading; a word stops me. I leave the page. The syllables of the words begin to move around … The words take on other meanings as if they had the right to be young.
