Have we ever seen Jerry Garcia and Gandalf together?
I wish you could have been there When she opened up the door And looked me in the face Like she never did before I felt about as welcome As a Wal-Mart Superstore--John Prine

Elven by name, Hobbit by nature 'Road lead ever on and on down from the door where it began now far ahead the road has gone down from where all began' -FOTR- and through all the world has changed the ages come and go with time and yet those remain unchanged unto they journey westward over the sea...

"But the future of which he speaks is the readers' present..." I got such a chill as I read this. I've always thought of Gandalf as being a conduit for Tolkien himself... and he suddenly turned and looked straight at me, pointing, and spoke that message to me. *shivers again* Suddenly, a worm-hole moment. P'raps Gandalf's reincarnation also freed him from the magnitude of his caretaking or shepherding of Middle-earth and was able to focus on just this one event. It has always struck me how easy it seemed for him to ride away from the hobbits on the border of Bombadil's land when he knew there was trouble in River City. Yes, he was confident that the hobbits had grown enough to handle it themselves, but would the old Gandalf have done so?
Trust him... The Hobbit is coming! "Barney Snow was here." ~Hug like a hobbit!~ "In my heaven..." TORn's Observations Lists
