News story - Amazon's ROP pioneers cloud-based production

Modern technology allowed Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to have a colourist in Idaho, a cameraman in New Zealand, and a studio in Los Angeles, all working in unison. The production might have shifted to UK, creating uncertainty for the over 1200 Kiwis who worked on the film, but producer Ron Ames says the cloud-based systems pioneered by the production would prove a boon for the New Zealand industry, as artists and other specialists could be pulled into working on films being shot anywhere on the planet. ...Ames said the new cloud-based approach trialled during The Rings of Power would inevitably become the industry norm, as productions went fully digital. “We didn’t have paper scripts, nothing was kept in any way other than digitally,” he said. “We never lost a frame, we never lost an asset.” ...Urban said during the height of filming The Rings of Power his teams were dealing with six to 10 terabytes of raw footage per day. “That’s a lot of data to push.” Full story: https://www.stuff.co.nz/...ing-a-boon-for-kiwis

my sense this has become more and more of the norm, which is unfortunate for the local crew that would have normally worked those jobs, as you say. I know of productions where the director and editor never once meet in person through the entire job. But one can hope that perhaps this, in the long-term, can also expand the reach of who can work some jobs on productions as well, if one is talented. Maybe everyone won't necessarily have to be located in one of two or three specific cities to be considered. I supposed it's a mixed bag, like most things, depending on how one fares in the changing world!

Remote work has been available for decades. I've been working remote since the 80s. It's a shame it took Covid to force people to realize how much they can save their time, money and fossil fuels uselessly comminuting their life away every week day or more, and dumping all that pollution into the atmosphere. Not to mention all the resources, mining and more fossil fuels it takes to build the transportation network and concrete and steel boxes people are shepherded into every day to make a living. There is obvious work with physical objects that must be done onsite. No question. But I am greatly disappointed on the other side of Covid that we are not using it as enlightenment and instead simply going back to the old ways in the face of this existential threat to our life on this planet.

is that people aren't coming together from all over the world to work alongside each other, pick up new bits of knowledge and develop networks created through shared experiences and chatting/sharing drinks or meals during downtime. Thay's even more valuable when you live and work in a small out-of-the-way country. But I guess there are benefits and drawbacks to everything.
