It's going to seem strange with that hedge and all gone! Do you have any thoughts on what kind of fencing you'd like to have in place? Not the kind that vines would grow up and around, I assume! Laugh

Hi, Dernwyn! [In reply to] Can't Post

I've become something of a hermit, but I enjoy hiking and biking on local trails. Uncle Baggins is slowing down so I usually go by myself. The national park is getting really crowded and you have to get reservations to get in now, so we've only been a handful of times this summer.

The harp is still frustrating since my stroke so I don't get it out much, but I did join my church choir and am loving it. It's a lot less anxiety producing performing with 50 other people than it was being up there all by myself.

I recently finished writing a fanfic based on the Wizard of Oz, Pastoria's Daughter . And I've been playing a lot of solo boardgames and perusing facebook. I guess that's about it. How are you doing?

Edit: I clearly don't remember how to do links anymore :-D

The new owner has selected a dark-coloured metal fence. [In reply to] Can't Post

It's not what I would have gone for but she's paying half and has got the other neighbour onside, so I went with it.

A neighbour to the side wants to get rid of our shared wooden fence as it's falling apart, but wants an open ironwork fence to replace it. I did push back on that (I like privacy) and I'm waiting on him to drop off a pamphlet of options to choose from.

I think back to when I was a bright-eyed newbie in the home-ownership stakes. I had noooo idea how expensive maintenance would be! Crazy

Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."

Sauron: "Mine's better."

Still working [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm still enjoying doing library and tech work at my small pre-K to 8 school, it's nice to have a variety of things to do each day. But I'm seriously considering making next year my last, as I'll be turning 70 during the year, and the thought of having to crawl out of a warm bed to face icy winter roads is becoming less appealing! Laugh

Good to know you're still getting outdoors! The national parks really are getting crowded, you even have to make reservations to drive up Cadillac Mt. in Acadia to see the sunrise.

But choirs are fun places to "hide in plain sight" in!

I've edited your link, looks like it works now, and glad that you're still writing! Cool

Welcome back!! [In reply to] Can't Post

You've been missed. Heart

Adding to what dernwyn said, the board software is set up to take payments if we were a business, so the 'not secure' message is related to that function. We're completely secure for what we use the boards for. It's a little frustrating that it gives that message, but there you go.

Glad to hear you're still getting out and about a bit. Say hello to Uncle Baggins, and hope to see you here more often!

Nice that you get a long weekend [In reply to] Can't Post

Bummer that the cat is one of 'those.' I got my cats out of that phase by saying 'no' then walking away and ignoring them, but you're probably not going to be around him long enough for it to sink in that it's not acceptable behaviour.

Ha! Boston fern is an invasive species there? They're indoor house plants here. I adopted one from a plant arrangement sent to my sister's funeral a few years back, and have learned that they propagate by sending out thin 'feelers' that take root. I just snip them off when I find them but I can see how they could take over if they were planted in the soil outdoors.

I have a ground cover of voluntary vinca that grew from a container I put out long ago. I've come to terms with it on one side of my garden and it doesn't seem to want to spread further (probably too sunny in other areas), so we have an uneasy truce at this point.

Good luck with it!

We were going to go to a nearby air show this weekend, but B.G. is a bit under the weather. Still, I'm hoping to see a few of the planes as they circle around during their displays. Other than that, no plans for any Fall trips.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend and the reunion!

don't get me started on home maintenance [In reply to] Can't Post

My aging oil tank leaked about 200 gallons of heating oil into the ground, and I was lucky from all accounts - I only ended up paying out $15,000 to get it remediated, which involved digging up my back yard to a depth of about 10 feet. I heard horror stories of people paying in excess of $100K if the oil got into groundwater. We didn't get it all out of the soil (the hole was starting to threaten my foundations) but we dumped a bunch of oil-eating organisms in and the state dept of Ecology called it good. While digging the guys pulled out a large granite rock, about 6 feet across, and put it in my garden. I got compliments on the great rock, and I would say "yeah, only cost me $15,000!"

That was after completely replumbing (including replacing the greywater system), rewiring, insulating, replacing all the single-pane windows, and completely redoing the funky bathroom. And fencing. And building a back deck. I can't begin to calculate how many hours and dollars I poured into my garden. Oh, and repainting. I managed to move before replacing the roof became critical.

Oops, I guess I did get started!

Don't get me wrong: I loved my house. I had a lot of fun making it exactly the home I'd longed for. But I'm happy now to be in a condo.

Basic Buttery Banana Breads [In reply to] Can't Post

Well, finding ourselves short of pumpkin pie spice after baking (and devouring) back to back batches of the pumpkin muffins I shared here, but having lots of very ripe bananas on hand, I whipped up a dozen of these:

Sird’s basic buttery banana breads (erm, muffins)

The recipe is adapted from a banana bread recipe I found at Simply Recipes. Because I find muffins so much more convenient, I made them instead by adjusting the temp and relative baking time. These little beauties are so dense and moist I just know they’ll travel well on a long walk to Rivendell (or beyond ;) ). Mind you, these are not fancy—rather they are basic, satisfying and hobbity (though I’m quite sure our Holbytla friends never heard of bananas).

For 12 muffins

All in one bowl combine in order, mixing at each step
5 very ripe 6 inch bananas, mushed
3/4 cup melted butter
2 eggs beaten
2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 1/2 cup fine brown sugar
3 cups all purpose flour

Mix until well and thoroughly blended then scoop into 12 muffin cups in a muffin pan using a 60ml scoop. Muffin cups should be brimming.
Bake at 375F for 25-27 minutes (until a toothpick comes out clean when plunged into a muffin’s top).
Transfer to a cooling rack as soon as possible.
Eat, repeat!

A banner recipe? [In reply to] Can't Post

LOL, I nearly forgot about this! Here it is, it's found on the can of One-Pie Pumpkin.

First, make a pie crust for a 9-inch pie pan. (If anyone's interested in making their own: mix 1 cup flour and 1/2 tsp salt, cut in 1/3 cup Crisco or lard or other lard substitute until the mixture is fine crumbs, then with a fork stir in 1 Tbsp. orange juice followed by enough iced water, 1 Tbsp. at a time, to make a firm dough. Roll out, lay in pan, and flute the edges.)

For the pie:
Sift together 1 cup sugar, 1 Tbsp. cornstarch, and a half teaspoon each of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and salt.
Mix in the can of pumpkin.
Add 2 beaten eggs, a 12-oz can of evaporated milk, 1 1/2 Tbsp. melted butter, and 1/8 cup molasses.
Pour into the pie crust.
Bake at 450F for 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 350F and bake another 50 minutes, or until a knife inserted partway in comes out clean.
Let cool before cutting!

It's intriguing to discover [In reply to] Can't Post

what a thug an apparently well-mannered houseplant can be, in a different environment! The main scourge of my flowerbeds is couch grass - a coarse grass that spreads by trailing roots, with the same problem - leave a bit behind and off it goes again. That, and a sweet little thing called viola labradorica (cute little violet flower with purplish leaves, very decorative) which I inflicted on myself! Mea culpa... I nicked some seeds from a public garden ages ago and since then it has been making itself at home everywhere. serves me right!

oh those violets do love to take over! [In reply to] Can't Post

my brother and sister-in-law ended up digging up their backyard and putting down new sod to get rid of them! Granted, it was a smallish lawn, but it had been totally invaded. SIL could dig them out of the garden border but not the lawn itself and finally cried uncle.

We had them too at the parental home. I notice that the new owners have dug up and replaced that lawn as well.
