Oh dear [In reply to] Can't Post

I tried to do it closed-book and that was a bit of a disaster, lol. I did pretty good at who said what, but didn't remember the where on most of them. Blush Still, it was fun reading the answers and jogging my memory. Thanks a bunch, grmma!

Words of the "unwise", too! [In reply to] Can't Post

These are classics, gramma! And some in fun situations. Let's see:

1) It’s the job that’s never started as takes longest to finish.
I'm so often saying this! Laugh Sam quoting his Gaffer to Frodo, before they look into the Mirror of Galadriel.

2) It’s an ill wind as blows nobody no good.
And All's Well as Ends Better! The gaffer again, to anybody, about his being restored to his home near Bag End.

3) The burned hand teaches best.
Ouch. Gandalf to Pippin as they ride Shadowfax, about the hobbit's near-disastrous peek into the Palantir.

4) Make haste while the sun shines.
I had to look this up! Goldberry to the hobbits, as they headed out onto the Barrow-downs.

5) All that is gold does not glitter. (3 times)
The first time is the letter from Gandalf at Barliman's, then Strider quotes it, and finally Bilbo gives the full poem at the Council of Elrond, claiming it as his own composition.

6) Where will wants not, a way opens.
Sneaky! Dernhelm to the distraught Merry: Eowyn has managed a way for them both to join in the battle to come.

7) The hasty stroke goes oft astray.
Aragon speaking to Legolas and Gimli about revealing himself to Sauron in the Palantir.

8) At table small men may do the greater deeds.
LOL! Beregond cheering up Pippin after the hobbit's hard ordeal with Denethor over a paltry meal.

9) Need brooks no delay, yet late is better than never.
Had to look this up, also: it's Eomer repeating this "old saw" when he and Theoden learn their messengers never reached Minas Tirith.

10) Handsome is as handsome does. (2 times)
Heh, the first time is Pippin saying that about Strider on their first meeting. But the second time it's Sam quoting that as he realizes he's made a blunder in front of Faramir.

Thank you for the challenge, gramma!
Cool
