I used concrete blocks to stabilize the weight on dirt... and the size was determined from the lengths and amount of wood I had laying around. I built it in the garage then took it apart and re-assembled in its new home. I did a slant roof so snow won't pile up too much. The tin gives coverage without adding weight... plus it saved on needing more wood ;) It's not air tight because the straw needs ventilation or it'll mold or, if the conditions are right (hot temps), spontaneously combust! It'll hold at least 11 bales. Got shingles on the roof. When I don't have straw, the lawnmower and yard tools will fit.

You could put a chair in there, and books to read, and a roll of "tissues"...a "non-functioning" outhouse!

have to say I am impressed with your energy. My friends and I are a pretty healthy bunch for late 60s-early 70s but most of us are choosing to downsize and limit big projects these days.
