Quite hard core [In reply to] Can't Post

At least when it comes to the Hobbit, Lotr and the Silmarillion. I did read Lotr when I was fairly young and I did finish it after a few goes around halfway through secondary school. I did get most of it although a few details I had to understand later. I still do!

A long-time fan who comes and goes [In reply to] Can't Post

My fandom has waxed and waned over the years. Probably due to not-officially-diagnosed high functioning autism and related conditions that run in my family, I have a tendency to become deeply interested, even obsessed about things for a period of time, and then the interest fades into the background for years sometimes. I was obsessed with the books for a couple of years in 8th-9th grade. It faded until 2001, and then for a while in college I was obsessed with the films and the extended edition DVDs. That was when I joined this forum. Again my interest waned until the Hobbit films began pre-production, at which point my interest re-ignited, although I initially found the Hobbit films less fulfilling than the LOTR films, probably due again to autistic nitpicking. Of course as time goes on those films have gained their own sense of nostalgia. Being aware of my condition helps me understand better why, at times I feel like a superfan and wish I could cosplay as a Hobbit (or a Ghostbuster, or a Starfleet Officer, etc) and at other times I feel like an impostor due to lack of dedication. I included some easter-egg references to Tolkien in two novels that I wrote and published in recent years, so hopefully that counts for something. Recently I've gotten a little sick of Facebook and I started to miss the sense of fellowship I felt as part of TORN's fan community, so I stopped by and saw this thread and thought I'd join in.

...a far green country under a swift sunrise. As the ship approached the edge of the world and the undying lands came into view, Frodo could not help but wonder: "How long? How long? How long to the Point of Know Return?

Let me see [In reply to] Can't Post

Do the math :)
I am turning 51 this summer and have read nearly everything "canon" in Tolkien's world since I was 10.
When I lived in Austria during my teenage years we students payed next to nothing on the trains and in Vienna there was the British Council Library - with everything by and about Tolkien's works and Jane Austen's :)

(no, not a fan of any fan fiction).
