Do you really want to know [In reply to] Can't Post

1. When navigating, do you turn the map to match the direction you're going in or keep it the way it opens up?

I turn the map. How else would I get out Mirkwood? My compass helps too.

2. Are you a grouchy patient or a suffer-in-silence one?

Suffer in silence. (Darn Nazgul blade!)

3. Where is your ideal home?

Something along the lines of what Beorn had. (I hate visitors too.)

4. What flower, shrub or tree best matches your personality?

Anything with thorns that would even pierce Orc mail.

5. What has made you laugh recently?

Reading some of the comments on these message boards. (Silly Hobbits!) Cool

However, I also have a very soft spot for New Zealand (and Kiwis, in particular Wink) and suspect I might live there someday.

I've been reading... [In reply to] Can't Post

the fan-translated manga online, almost up to the end. My library has the official ones, so I'll be reading through those as well. Yes, funny and sad, and very addictive! I've been watching in English and then Japanese with subtitles and comparing the translation. There are some interesting (and sometimes puzzling) differences.

Thanks for the recommendation. Looks like my library has that as well, so I'll have to check it out.

1. When navigating, do you turn the map to match the direction you're going in or keep it the way it opens up?
Turn it.

2. Are you a grouchy patient or a suffer-in-silence one?
Silent, unless trying to get Mr. FF to take charge of the kids while I nap. Or in labor, or at the dentist...OK, I'm grouchy.

3. Where is your ideal home?
Right here.

4. What flower, shrub or tree best matches your personality?
Something low-maintence like purple coneflower.

5. What has made you laugh recently?
I wish I could remember. There was something from a movie that kept making me snert involuntarily last week, but now I've forgotten what it was.

Where's Frodo?

Derry N.I.

4. What flower, shrub or tree best matches your personality?
Snap dragon.

5. What has made you laugh recently?
My friend after viewing 300. "Well, that wasn't our usual chick flick!"

Wonderful to see you joining in! [In reply to] Can't Post

Welcome to the best of Tolkien and Tolkien folk. Stop in any timeSmile.

"Tolkien, like Lewis, believed that, through story, the real world would become a more magical place, full of meaning. We see its patterns and colors in a fresh way. The recovery of a true view of the world applies both to individual things, like hills and stones, and to the cosmic - the depths of space and time itself. For in sub-creation, in Tolkien's view, there is a "survey" of space and time. Reality is captured on a miniature scale. Through stories like The Lord of the Rings, a renewed view of things is given, illuminating the homely, the spiritial, the physical, and the moral dimensions of the world."

Hi there! [In reply to] Can't Post

(It used to be, I'd provide a link to "TORn 101" for "newbies", but with these new boards there's no need - its upgrade, TORn 201, is right there in the main index!)

Welcome to TORn! Did you lurk for a while, or plunge right in? Book-firster or movie-firster? I see we have the same favorite character! Smile

Thanks [In reply to] Can't Post

for the warm welcome. I have visited the main page daily for more than a year for its updates. For whatever reason I was finally brave/motivated enough to look for the forums. In answer to your question about book first or movie first: I read The Hobbit in high school, but it was not what one would call a "careful read". I saw the movies and then began to read again. It was so wonderful to find something to read that was worth my time!

Now there's a statement! [In reply to] Can't Post

"It was so wonderful to find something to read that was worth my time!" Smile

Keep a lookout for gramma's TiME (Today in Middle-earth, the chronology of events) and BS (book spoilers) to get a "daily dose" of Tolkien! And a few months ago in the RR we finished up another slow-go through LotR, doing a chapter a week; even after twenty-some readings, I found many things I'd missed before, there's so much in these stories!

Yeah, I remember that first time I hesitantly clicked on "discussion", having no idea what I was getting into...Laugh

I haven't watched it in English yet. [In reply to] Can't Post

I usually watch anime in Japanese, as I studied it for two years and I like listening to it.

Does your library have the Azumanga manga or the anime? Or both? I haven't read the manga yet. Let me know what you think.

Well... [In reply to] Can't Post

The Japanese version is better than the English. I think the English version was a little handicapped by trying to match the words to the mouth movements. They didn't do a bad job, but it loses some detail and humor. And Yuki and Ayame's voice portrayals are way different, though I like Shigure's. What I'd love is to be able to read the little "scene change" panels. I have the distinct feeling I'm missing something by not knowing what they say. And they don't translate them.

My library has 5 discs of the Azumanga anime and one volume of the manga listed. I'll let you know what I think when I get a chance to check them out (may be a little while, I'm somewhat swamped ATM).

North iis always UP!!!!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

1. When navigating, do you turn the map to match the direction you're going in or keep it the way it opens up?

North is always UP as all good little geologists know.

2. Are you a grouchy patient or a suffer-in-silence one?

I try to be the most pleasant patient they have - maybe then they will believe me when something REALLY hurts

3. Where is your ideal home? one that is in the country and comes with a maid, gardner and handyman.

4. What flower, shrub or tree best matches your personality? Lilac, looks old fashion and simple from a distance but when you get close it is very complex and has lots to offer

5. What has made you laugh recently? My daughter trying to use advanced vocabulary.
