Elanor Arwen arrives! A birth announcement at Can't Post

our church this Sunday. I do not know these people, and I'm only attending online right now; but I must meet them at the earliest opportunity!
So, does anyone else have friends/family with specific LOTR names? This is the closest I've come yet.

Lovely! [In reply to] Can't Post

The names go together well!

No friends or family with LotR names so far; I've had a Thorin go through our school, but that family tended to have Scandinavian names.

What a beautiful name! [In reply to] Can't Post

Many years ago, while I was in school in the 1970s we had a "Wyn" and a Strider in attendance (two different families if I recall correctly). I didn't realize until somewhat later that Wyn was short for Eowyn though Blush.

I have met a Galadriel [In reply to] Can't Post

lovely, tall young lady with yes, long blonde hair. Her parents loved the book.

I've also met a Thorin but not Tolkien-inspired; it's a family name he said. I think he was of Dutch ancestry.

I once met... [In reply to] Can't Post

...a young woman named Arwen. When I commented, she told me that her parents were big LotR fans. She enjoyed the movies and was moved to read the books, but was dismayed that Arwen has a much smaller role in them.

I was tickled by her last name: Riddle. Way to split the LotR universe with the Harry Potter one!

Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow....

How perfect! [In reply to] Can't Post

I hope she enjoys the name and the reference to this day.

Did that Thorin pronunce it "Torin"? It would be in German I suppose, but I don't know about Dutch.

Hope you're shoulder's well on the mend, by the way!

Or, with the Hobbit! [In reply to] Can't Post

I hope later on this Arwen realized that Book Arwen, although less of a role, had far more dignity and authority, if I read it right. Smile

Not friends or family... [In reply to] Can't Post

...but I've just been on the Wales bit of the BBC news website and been warned that winds of up to 75mph are expected this weekend, as a result of "Storm Arwen".
(Next week's headline: Queen of Gondor sues Meteorological Office. "I don't have wind and certainly not at 75mph!")

I made a huge mistake [In reply to] Can't Post

I bought a house on a peninsula that sticks out into the strait between Washington State and British Columbia, which is known for its gales, We experienced lots of storms. Without thinking it through I said I might call my new house "Windy End." 25 years later my family are still laughing. But I admit I treasure the drawing my niece made of me in front of the house -- with everyone else holding their noses.

In my defense, Americans usually say "gas" instead of "wind" in this context.

Not quite on subject, but Storm Arwen... [In reply to] Can't Post

Not quite on subject, but Storm Arwen is to be the first of the named storms for Winter 2021-22, according to the Irish/UK/Dutch naming system for these things. Storm Arwen is expected to hit us this weekend. Looks like it might be windy but not too unusually so in my patch (Oxfordshire), but pretty wild in parts of Scotland.
The names are suggested by the public (and then of course have to fit various criteria). But it suggests that Arwen is at least a name on the minds of the Irish, British and/or Dutch public!
