Maxim Baldry said to be Isildur; confirms that at least a part of the show will depict Akallabeth Can't Post

I had the priviledge of being invited on a chat with Fellowship of the Fans and Nerd of the Ring in which we unveiled that Isildur is a main character of the show, and is believed to be played by Maxim Baldry.

This means that at least a part of the show will depict the events of the late Second Age, beginning (given Isildur's age) probably at the time of Tar-Palantir and Pharazon pre-Ar. Also expect Isildur and Tar-Miriel.

If true, interesting news. [In reply to] Can't Post

On the positive side, I think it is a good idea to focus on human characters as the protagonists of the show. There is a strong reason why Tolkien's protagonists tend to be men or small men and not elves. Expect to see lots of character modernization in the show (psychology, etc.), which is the wrong approach either way, but at least more justifiable with human characters as opposed to elves. I always thought the idea of entirely elven main cast would end in disaster, i.e., bland looking young actors consumed by soapy story arcs. Still might happen, but who knows...

Is this what you were referring to ... [In reply to] Can't Post

... when you said that "someone" had been been proven incorrect on some matters?

Completely agree [In reply to] Can't Post

I feel, maybe wrongly, just that its easier for a casual viewer to relate to a human character than an Elf, Dwarf or even a Hobbit.

Late Third Age [In reply to] Can't Post

I watched the premiere of Fellowship of Fans' video (couldn't join the chat as I was in bed). For the time being, I'm going to assume that the show will follow Tolkien's general chronology and won't severely compress events to the point where Ar-Pharazôn is putting an end to the War of the Elves and Sauron. At least I hope that this is not where the show is headed.

It seems unlikely that we are going to see Sauron as Annatar unless it is in the Prologue or shown as flashback (although he will probably still be in his fair form until the Downfall of Númenor). Ditto for the forging of the Great Rings. I certainly did not expect the show to dwell on the late Third Age so early, but that probably does make it easier on having Mannish characters who aren't in danger of ageing out of the show due to time skips of thousands of years. It does undercut the description of certain characters (see Galadriel) as "young", though I guess it's all relative.

It is [In reply to] Can't Post

Said “someone” being myself. But it costs me nothing to be proven wrong.

Honestly, I’m bewildered at not having noticed Baldry’s resemblance of Harry Sinclair earlier, which is to say nothing of Lloyd Owen as Elendil.

Thanks. [In reply to] Can't Post

Any insight as to whether the expectation is that the series will quickly move towards the events leading up to and including the Akallabeth, or if that part of the show is likely to be several years in?

Maybe. [In reply to] Can't Post

Difficult to say.

I remember quite early there were some reports about the show being about 'who's the only person the ring has no effect on'. Which would mean Sauron, though it could still be about Sauron during his captivity in Numenor. I would have guessed the war of Sauron and the Elves though. Again have to wait and see.

On the positive side, if the show does include Isildur as a main character, we are almost certain to get the downfall and the last alliance.
