Tar-Aldarion

"However, the first ship he had sailed on belonged to Vëantur and was called Númerrámar, the "West-wings".[2]

Around that time, the Drúedain who were living in Númenor became uneasy when Tar-Aldarion started his great travels and urged him not to go, foreseeing the mischief to come. They did not succeed and one after another they took ships towards Middle-earth.[4] Indeed under his reign the deforesting of Enedwaith and Minhiriath began.[3]"

Yes. [In reply to] Can't Post

The Elves even accounted the Drúedain as the fourth kindred of the Edain, though I'm not sure that the other Númenóreans thought of them that way.

Frankly... [In reply to] Can't Post

...I thought it was much more likely that Sir Lenny Henry had been cast as a Drúadan man or as a Southron than as a Hobbit. But evidently not!

What if it's all misdirection? Perhaps the series begins with a party in the Shire or maybe at Annúminas. The actors in the series have their regular Human and Elven roles, but also double as hobbits at the party. The party could serve as a frame for the whole series when someone asks Aragorn or someone else, perhaps, how the great kingdoms of men were established in Middle-earth. Then the whole series is told in flashback. Amazon loves using flashbacks in its movies and tv series.

Given the interest in using this series to update Tolkien's racial framework, [In reply to] Can't Post

I would be surprised if the Amazon producers got the rights to, and used, the Druedain as part of a Second Age story.

As we know from the extensive treatment they get in Tolkien's notes as printed in Unfinished Tales, the race is explicitly conceived of and narrated as the "noble savage" or "good Indian" type familiar to endless European imperial and colonial romances. The druedain are primitive but talented, if unlovely in appearance, and are endlessly loyal as servants, guides, and helpmates to their superior employers, the Edain of Beleriand and later the Dunedain of Numenor.

Now perhaps the writers will "fix" all that with a reconception of who the Drugs are and what their social status and roles are in the Amazon version of Middle-earth. But once again, such a fix just begs the question of why Tolkien's name is to be attached to the result, which would go against his clearly written, if uncomfortable to more modern minds, ideas about these people.

It could be that the Tolkien estate is supportive of "modernising" some aspects [In reply to] Can't Post
