Tolkien was awarded the CBE in 1972 [In reply to] Can't Post

That's Commander of the British Empire, an honor nominally awarded by the Queen, on advice of the government.

According to Scull & Hammond's monumental 'Chronology' of the Prof's life, the Queen did present him the award.

He later wrote, "...I was very deeply moved by my brief meeting with the Queen, & our few words together. Quite unlike anything I had expected." (S&H entry for 28 March 1972)

Not surprisingly, there's no mention here of his meeting the Duke, at a reception afterwards say, or anything else.

Prince Philip [In reply to] Can't Post

yes; Tolkien met the Prince at an exhibition called Craftman's Art at the Victoria and Albert Museum, on 8 May 1973. Tolkien was photographed with the Prince and the bookbinder Philip Smith. The Prince had been presented with a copy of LotR bound by Smith, and autographed by Tolkien.
See Scull & Hammond, Chronology.
