A movie quote I have wondered about

Although this is book-related too, so I think I'll post it here. In Rivendell after he hears of Isengard's treason, in the movie FOTR, Elrond says 'Our list of allies grows thin,' now, I know this is not the exact line and person saying this line from the book. Yet the line sounds familar to me and I have a feeling that someone does say something like this or somewhere there is a quote like it in the narrative. Or is it a quote that simply sounds like Tolkien but isn't?

Not a book quote that I recall. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will correct me in the next thirty seconds or so, but I do not recall that line from any of the published material.

I don’t think it sounds like Tolkien; but then

in my mind, movie Elrond did not often sound like book Elrond (though I appreciated movie Elrond well enough, in a manner of speaking, as Samwise would say). Now would be the time for someone to find the quote, ha!

It's from the book of Tolkien-ishness

What Elrond says at the Council, after Gandalf's account of the Treason of Isengard (as Tolkien dubbed it), is:
‘This is grievous news concerning Saruman,’ he said; ‘for we trusted him and he is deep in all our counsels. It is perilous to study too deeply the arts of the Enemy, for good or for ill. But such falls and betrayals, alas, have happened before. - LR II.2 Tolkien does use the term 'allies' in the sense of the movies' dialogue, but I don't think he ever uses the melodramatic phrase "grows thin".

I can not think of or remember which movies may have had similar quotes. Might have been TV series as well. Probably the use of the line is inspired by the passage of Tolkien quoted by squire. They were looking for something shorter.
