A birthaversary post - and a mathom for all Can't Post

So it's around this time of the year that I joined TORN 19 years ago. Having hung around in the background for ages, I finally registered and made my first post in reply to an Off-Topic thread on the game Minesweeper, of all things. It's been a hectic, mad, fun, sad, inspirational and bonkers time over the years, and I've made friends from around the world and had experiences I'd never have had the chance to enjoy if it hadn't been for TORN's message boards and the diverse, wonderful people who inhabit them.

Also, next week I have a big O birthday, so it's convenient to combine a birthday and TORN anniversary. Smile

In the tradition of the Four Farthings of Hobbiton, I offer up a birthday mathom! I don't know when I wrote this parody - a very long time ago, certainly. I hope you enjoy it.

Cheers, everyone - and here's to many more years of fellowship! Smile

'All those I have loved'
(To the tune of 'Miss America Pie' )

A long, long time ago...
I can still remember how
I used to make my mother smile.
But I knew if I had my chance,
To fight the long fight in these lands,
I'd have to say goodbye then, for a while.
My leaving it did make me shiver,
And my mother's tears did quiver.
She was standing on the doorstep,
She couldn't take one more step.
I can't remember if I cried
But I know part of me did die.
Her tears, they touched me deep inside,
The day I bid farewell.

So...
Bye bye to all those I have loved.
Did my walkin' and my waitin' 'til my heart said enough.
This Middle-earth needs a Numenorean King,
Singing "This'll be the Age of the fight,
"This'll be the Age of the fight."

Did you forge the evil One Ring,
And do you have faith in Eru our King,
If your heart tells you so?
Now do you believe in Sauron Lord?
Can the Dark One save your mortal soul?
And can you teach me how to kill real slow?
Well I know that you're in love with him
'Cause I saw you hewing all your kin.
You're more Orc than Man-kind,
Man you must be really blind!
I was a lonely wand'ring Dunedan
When I lost my heart to fair Arwen
But I knew that our time was not then,
The day I bid farewell.

I started singing....
Bye bye to all those I have loved.
Did my walkin' and my watchin' 'til my heart said enough.
This Middle-earth needs a Numenorean King,
Singing "This'll be the Age of the fight,
"This'll be the Age of the fight."

Now for long years I've been on my own
With broken sword and a face of stone
But that's not how it used to be.
I saw her dancing 'neath the trees
Her dark hair long and flowing free
And a voice that came from history.
Oh I cried out from my raptured heart,
But maiden fair she did depart.
I wandered long forlorn,
The world did seem to mourn.
But long I saw her once again
Dancing in a wooded glen
And then she gave her heart to Men.
But still, I bid farewell.

We were singing...
Bye bye to all those I have loved.
Did my walkin' and my watchin' 'til my heart said enough.
This Middle-earth needs a Numenorean King,
Singing "This'll be the Age of the fight,
"This'll be the Age of the fight."

Raven maiden in a kingdom haven
With long years from her bloodline Elven,
Tinuviel she was again.
We walked within that hidden realm
Her hand in mine, long stories tell
Of how love was kindled for Man and Elf.
Now the father knew his daughter's life
Would be forsaken, and the strife
Of not seeing her again,
Would be too much to bear.
As Queen of Gondor was the only way
That Arwen would be mine someday.
My happiness did fall away
The day I bid farewell.

We started singing...
Bye bye to all those I have loved.
Did my walkin' and my watchin' 'til my heart said enough.
This Middle-earth needs a Numenorean King,
Singing "This'll be the Age of the fight,
"This'll be the Age of the fight."

And so I walked from place to place,
Isildur's heir a hidden face
'til broken sword was forged anew.
So come on, Men on horse and Men on foot
Come fight for what we've all been taught:
For freedom and for all of our friends.
And as we fought at every stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage,
Just the One Ring made to melt
Could break that Sauron's spell.
And as the shadow rose in flight
And broke apart before our sight
I started laughing in delight,
The day I bid farewell.

We were singing...
Bye bye to all those I have loved.
Did my walkin' and my fightin' 'til my heart said enough.
This Middle-earth needs a Numenorean King,
Singing "This'll be the Age of the fight,
"This'll be the Age of the fight."

And now the years have passed away
And Gondor flowers every day
And children loudly laugh and play.
The time I've had beside my wife
Has been the brightest of my life
But all good things must fail and fade.
As I lie here in Rath Dinen
And Arwen cries at my leavin'
I know it will be a long time
Before I have her at my side.
Iluvatar's gift to Men
Can seem hard to take, but then
I know I'll once more see Gilraen
This day, I bid farewell.

I started singing...
Bye bye to all those I have loved.
Did my walkin' and my rulin' 'til my heart said enough.
This Middle-earth had a Numenorean King,
Singing "This'll be the Age of the fight,
"This'll be the Age of the fight."

Bye bye to all those I have loved.
Did my walkin' and my rulin' 'til my heart said enough.
This Middle-earth had a Numenorean King,
Singing "This'll be the Age of the fight."

Brava! [In reply to] Can't Post

That gave me chills. Well done!

My oh my, it *has* been quite a ride, hasn't it? All-in-all a pretty darned fun one, I'd say, especially having people like you to put a smile on my face so often! I'm glad I've been one of the lucky ones to have met you in person. Happy, happy O bday, and here's to many more of those, and many more great years on TORn.

That's a great mathom.

Your 30th birthday, I take it? :) You obviously joined TORn as a child.

It's been a wonderful 19 years of sharing the boards with you. Here's to many more. And have a great birthday!

And oh my, what a great mathom. Thank you!

Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow....

happy birthaversary as well.

I don't recall seeing this before. I do recall the days when such parodies were a commonplace on TORn . . . a nice tradition to revive!

Happy birthaversary! Many happy returns of the day! [In reply to] Can't Post

I wish I knew when I joined TORN. It seems a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, and it was initially under a different name than Tintallë. I well remember the controversy about Stuart Townsend as Aragorn but I have no clue about the time frame.

On the wall right next to me is my Daniel Reeve message boards print. I will never be far from TORN!
