Thanks! The old 'measure twice, cut once' rule applies [In reply to] Can't Post

to patchwork, most definitely. If you can cut everything out accurately and sew with an accurate seam allowance, you're halfway there. I do enjoy it and have a large cupboard full of my fabric stash, but I haven't a designated room or indeed a space for crafts, so when I start a project it takes over the kitchen/diner for the duration. There are 'cheaty' designs which are easy but look quite complicate. Even the fiddly flowers were less fiddly than you might think; they didn't involve any actual triangular pieces, but smaller squares laid over the corners of larger ones, then sewn diagonally and folded out with the surplus trimmed off. I struggle with quilting; my machine has the right foot but isn't really big enough, manoeuvring the fabric makes my hands ache and I haven't the patience to do it by hand, so I have to quilt in blocks('quilt as you go') then join them together or, in the case of the ruby wedding throw, tie through the layers at intervals with matching embroidery thread. I hope you manage to have a go, if you ever have any respite from all the jobs you're doing around the house!

That's how the flowers were made? [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm impressed, getting everything placed just so! And the result is a lovely flower garden!

I'm glad you're able to post pics, even if they're blurry we can still see them well enough. The Ruby Wedding is very attractive, and I like the patterning on the top one. What a lot of work you've put into these! Would the bottom one be a good beginner's quilt? And I have to ask - what is long-arm quilting?

Yes, the t-shirt shows two black cat faces wearing masks and is purrsonalized with the cats' names, Nigel and Melanie.
I did turn in my 2019 taxes on time, though they'll need amending later to itemize medical expenses. My parents' estates still aren't finished after five years.
I also voted by mail in some hotly (no pun intended) contested Texas runoffs. Waiting to see if my favorites won.
San Antonio has begun phase I drought restrictions; there's been little rainfall for weeks. Did you get any of that tropical storm?

*cuts, pastes (not sew), print* [In reply to] Can't Post

OK! Now I'm inspired. I have done all my sewing by hand (including costumes), and I tend to stitch my fingers together. But this would be so comforting and satisfying. My only problem is adding another "project" to my list of "wanna-do" stuff ;)

I'll have to hit some yard sales for a machine before they close them down AGAIN!

THANK YOU!

The bottom one [In reply to] Can't Post

the pinwheel throw - would be good, as it uses oddments that you might not think would match, but when they're all together it sort of works. You cut out pieces 6.5" x 2.5" (allowing for a .25" seam allowance) in the ratio one darker/plainer to two lighter. Then you pick a toning lighter plain fabric and cut 2.5" squares. At one end of each of the lighter strips you place a square, then sew diagonally across it (same way on every piece or chaos will ensue), trim the excess and press open to give a little triangle effect. Leave the darker pieces plain. Then left to right, you sew together the strips as follows: 1) upside down triangle, 2) darker strip,3) triangle right way up. Try drawing it out on paper to get the idea of how it all goes together. Six blocks will give you a 3' width, not counting any border you choose to add - that makes a nice little lap blanket, child's cover, throw for over the back of a chair/sofa. Do have a go!
The long arm quilter is a huge, wondrous device requiring a large room and quite a lot of skill! You can quilt a whole double bed sized quilt by fixing the pieced work on a roller, adding wadding and backing, then programming in the quilting design of choice. Push the button and off it goes. The results are wonderfully precise and professional-looking. For my piece, which is not very large, it cost £70 (including wadding) which is not a lot for some people, but I'm on a limited income so it was a one-off treat for me. I'm very happy with it.

"Purrsonalized"! [In reply to] Can't Post

I love it! Laugh

It's frustrating how long estate settling can take. My Mom passed in 2008, and I thought her estate was closed, but last year I was sent a check for her for 98 cents - apparently some stock she'd owned, which had gone under, had finally had a settlement, and that was her "final payment"! (My bank did let me cash it.)

That storm bypassed us, dropping just a bit of rain and wind. We're getting occasional pop-up storms in the afternoon, which don't last long. Do you get those in your area?

Bummer :( [In reply to] Can't Post

It's like not having your car... or an empty fridge! There's something just so wrong about not having your 'puter sitting there at the ready. I hope the repairs are easy and not to pricey. Hang in there!
