The Worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien - new book by John Garth Can't Post

John Garth, author of Tolkien and the Great War, has published a new book titled The Worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien: The Places That Inspired Middle-earth, or perhaps alternately, Tolkien's Worlds: The Places That Inspired the Writer's Imagination. It is ostensibly about real-world places that inspired Tolkien to imagine such places as the Shire, Rivendell, the Glittering Caves of Aglarond, etc. However, it also discusses place names of the Shire, history, archaeology, and Tolkien's overall creative process. The book contains original drawings and maps from J.R.R. (and Christopher?) Tolkien, illustrations from some well-known Tolkien artists, photographs of real-world places, and so on.

This looks good! [In reply to] Can't Post

Thank you! I didn't know this was in the works. I'm interested in seeing his info on inspired locations that "debunk" what was previously written by others :)

Garth spoke about the book for the Wade Center in May. [In reply to] Can't Post

David Bratman discusses that presentation here.

Treachery, treachery I fear; treachery of that miserable creature.

But so it must be. Let us remember that a traitor may betray himself and do good that he does not intend.

Temptation [In reply to] Can't Post

I could spend a fortune in books, if I had a fortune to spend (and a mansion with a large library to store the books). This book is certainly one I'm interested in, for various reasons. I'm particularly interested to see what Garth has to say about Gondolin and Laketown.
