Always raspberries - [In reply to] Can't Post

but at Christmas, tinned ones - this was in the days before we had a freezer. I can even remember our first ever fridge arriving, actually! Huge excitement. Before that we shopped very frequently and very locally. When the milk was delivered, we used to boil it, cool it, put it back into the bottle and stand the bottle in a bowl of cold water with a damp cloth over it to keep it cool by evaporation. (Perhaps I should add I'm 68!)

Birch suckers - [In reply to] Can't Post

forgot to say in my other post, I didn't realise birch suckered! The silver birches we have here don't, but they do seed themselves far and wide so they don't really need any other means of propagation.

The LOTR Cast Reunion: TORN folk, my old friends, this was a night to remember. [In reply to] Can't Post

Thank you, Altaira, for reminding me that I hadn't yet watched it. It was the perfect thing to enjoy on a cozy, rainy, Wellington Saturday night. I could never ever have imagined twenty years ago I would be here. How strange is life!

And watching this video was like having the Zoom meeting myself with all those lovely people. Such camaraderie and friendship among them. Such laughter and tears. That film trilogy became a huge part of my life when it came out - the films and the music and the landscapes and the characters. I find the dialog still popping out of my mouth in conversation. Blush Yes, I did watch the dvd's obsessively and was delighted to be immersed in a visual Middle-earth I had truly believed no one could conjure. I was happy to have been proved wrong.
Heart

Perhaps it's time for another LOTR marathon, you think? Laugh It's great to be among you who still get that.
Best wishes, nice people. And may you find that all your ducks are, indeed, in a row next year, Altaira!

You can remember when you had no refrigerator? [In reply to] Can't Post

And you pasteurized your milk yourselves! Those were the times when foods had to be eaten or baked or otherwise used very quickly.

Boxed cereals were probably the only "processed" foods available.

I'm two years your younger, and remember the old 'fridge with small "icebox" inside it, and having a box on the stoop for milk deliveries. But we lived in the growing suburbs outside a city, and Mom had to take a bus to get to a grocery store, so shopping trips couldn't be as frequent.

Now I've got visions of your Mom, kids in tow, walking to all the various local markets!

Congrats to your country! What have you been up to this past week, to celebrate the loosening of restrictions? Smile

There was a lot of tinned stuff - [In reply to] Can't Post

that was the store cupboard back-up. We had a general grocery store literally across the road, and ten minutes walk away was the Co-op, which was more like a supermarket. For anything else we had to take a bus. We probably ate more healthily then, even on a budget! So little processed food, except maybe luncheon meat (the thought makes my toes curl now, goodness knows what was in it) and cheese spread!

Boy did we need this love-fest right now. Elijah's glee is so fun... and everyone's responses! Especially when JRD prepares for his portion ;) Did you see a grown-up Ali join her Dad? And Katie?

I had the same problem [In reply to] Can't Post

And the way I stopped the encroaching was to take 3 ft sheets (about 2 ft wide each) of metal and hammered them straight down into the ground at the borderline. It took some time and I had to dig out some rocks in the way, but once I got the metal planted, the roots stopped.
Raspberry jam is my absolute favourite of all! :D I'm glad you finally got some rain for your outside babies. Have fun! :D

same here [In reply to] Can't Post

it was an "icebox" and I think almost the only things in it were ice cream and frozen spinach. We had a kind of well at the back of the stove where Mom sterilized bottles for the babies. Smith Brothers (who are still going) delivered milk, eggs, and cheese to us. I think we got milk every other day - with a family of 7 we went through it fast! And yes, boxed cereals. I grew up on Cheerios and Rice Krispies, usually with a banana sliced over.

My garden is BURGEONING. The raspberries have flowered & are setting fruit, the tomatoes are in flower, we're still eating rhubarb, the lettuce is just about ready to pick as the bok choy, the rhodies & azaleas are almost done but the roses are starting to bloom, the marigolds & pansies are putting on a show, and here come the dahlias and sweet peas and penstamens! I planted a bunch of sunflowers which are leaping up between the dahlias. We are starting to do a bit of socially-distant entertaining in our side yard, family only so far, so "decorating" the yard is more important this year than ever.

Speaking of rhubarb, my niece sent me the yummiest recipe from Bon Appetit for a rhubarb custard cake - big hit with the family! Here it is: https://www.bonappetit.com/...rhubarb-custard-cake

I cut the sugar to 1 cup and it was still very sweet, so next time I'm going to make it with 3/4 of a cup, half what it calls for.

Woohoo! 2 weeks! [In reply to] Can't Post

Oh the sweet freedom of just walking out the door and going out into the world. Still guarded, I'm sure, by habit now; but the long hard work by everyone is finally paying off. *big hug*

While I'm sure the $ from tourism is missed from international visitors, the lives being saved comes first! And now the relief and freedom... just in time for winter hibernation ;) ENJOY YOUR BRULEE!!!

Someday we'll be able to celebrate your success in conquering the virus. I'm so SO happy for you and all of NZ! All the determination and unity is paying off in getting this thing under control.

I love what you say about returning to work so coming *home* is special. It's nice to not have to go into work everyday, but I think you've got it right. Home is home... not the workplace. It just figures the return to work means driving in winter weather now ;)

I hope you have a wonderful weekend... and BIG CONGRATS on the freedom from restrictions (more or less ;) just around the corner!!!

They're a type of goldfinch! [In reply to] Can't Post

I was just looking them up. They're actually a kind of American or Eastern goldfinch with the common name "wild canary".

Now imagine three birdfeed cylinders with the all-yellow ones massing around - that's our backyard at times!

All that is "gold" does not glitter...Cool!

Those iceboxes were barely large enough for the container of ice cream! [In reply to] Can't Post

Laugh And constantly needed de-frosting!

We had one of those "wells" in the stove, too, a "deep well" Mom called it. It was a necessity! I used to have the pan that fit down inside ours, with its double-handles on the rim.

Are you still getting milk deliveries? (I remember getting mad at my older brother because he'd drink straight out of the bottle.)

Cheerios with sliced banana! I think that must have been the standard American breakfast when we were kids!

I like your way of interspersing the tall dahlias and sunflowers. What kinds of roses do you have?

I'm slavering looking at that rhubarb custard recipe, and wondering if one could use part brown sugar in it to help cut the sweetness.

As for the luncheon meat - you're right, who knew what went into it back then, before there was much regulation. Tongue Even nowadays you have to read the labels carefully.

Wow, that must have taken ages! [In reply to] Can't Post

Digging my soil is heavy work (clay) and the offending tree is just on the other side of a privet hedge, so there would be the roots of that to consider too - added to which, I only have one strong arm now - the other one's not up to much. I think I'll just have to keep chopping it (the plum, not the arm!) wherever it appears. *sigh* There was more rain last night; things are looking more perky now, thank goodness.

I'm not surprised they were drawn in - Billy's singing, and that song especially, touches the heart.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

went really well. A lovely setting, and you're certainly spoiled for choice around there!

Yes, it did feel good to resume that pleasant part of our routine. My first outing, to the dentist, was more unsettling than anything, but this time felt much closer to what we now think of as normal.

Our usual [In reply to] Can't Post

breakfast order there is brioche French toast with blueberry conserve, and it's seriously delicious. They do half portions (which is not all that common around here), and a half size is plenty for me. That, with an excellent flat white, makes for a breakfast that sets me up for the day!

My guess would be that the borders won't be open by then, but of course as a returning Kiwi and partner you're always welcome home. But oh, three different sets of quarantine would seriously complicate things!

Here's to the next two... three... four....

I still feel the need to keep my distance, and I think that'll continue for quite some time. But it's nice to feel able to be out and about again, and enjoy some of those small pleasures.

Friends are coming around this afternoon, the first time we'll have hung out with them (other than on-line) since lockdown began. It'll be so good to see them in real life!

the only snag with rhubarb is the amount of sugar needed! My Mum used to make rhubarb and ginger jam, which was strangely appealing.
