What sports would the characters play? Can't Post

--or at least, what sports would it be amusing to think of the characters playing?
Over at Hobbit discussion, Loresilme brought us the possibility of Legolas being into golf. That smug elf's got golfer written all over him! I suggested Gimli playing squash...

I keep imagining Merry & Pippin vs Sam and Frodo.

Conkers!

When Thorin asked Bilbo what his weapon of choice was, Bilbo has boasted at being skilled at conkers.

The Ents... [In reply to] Can't Post

Would only play things that allow for looooooooong slooooooooow consideration of the next move, and would be the despair of promoters wanting to make large amounts of money from selling spectator tickets. Only other Ents could bear to watch, and there are not very many of them left.

Middle Earth, The Wide World of Sports [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello Alveric, I see gandalf, saruman, galadriel, elrond (anyone a few thousand yrs old) playing bocce. seen lots of elderly euro gentlemen at their past time, looks like fun. also croquet. weird interesting elf decorated wickets and mallets of mallorn.
the fellowship paddled down great river, qualifies them for canoe kayak whitewater rafting?
aragorn, legolas, boromir - fencing - legolas is disqualified from archery, too good.
hobbit rugby or soccer, the shire might be quite competitive, brandy hall rowdies vs the took titans. bree rangers vs the bag enders.
and bullroarer took whacking head off goblin and it rolling into a hole is credited for creation of golf, so hobbits would seem to have an edge there.

Hobbit rugby, for sure, or Dwarves [In reply to] Can't Post

Dwarves would be great rugby players, with their solid bulk and, what was it Gimli said (in the film), "natural sprinters!"

Merry and Pippin playing conkers, yes--I used to play conkers as a kid in Nottingham, a strange pastime...

By the way, I did mean to write Shelob, not Shebob. Shebob is another story entirely. (I have a relative who named their daughter Bobette after a father called Bob, apparently unaware of the option of Roberta.)

How about: least likely sport or pastime? Such as: Balrog origami.

Shire lends itself to divisions, geography.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello Alv, looking at the map of the shire, it totally lends itself to a full on league with divisions and playoff formats. East Farthing Division vs West Farthing, North Vs. South, or rotate who plays who. Lots of hobbit villages and towns to form clubs. will whitfoot the mayor and league commissioner. set up finals in big field by the 3 farthing stone. Perhaps is like a super bowl if the hobbit champions take on dwarf champions from the blue mts. Lots of possibles - league mvp, comeback hobbit player of the yr, bilbo baggins championshiop trophy, sky's the limit.

Sports & Games in Middle-earth [In reply to] Can't Post

From The Hobbit, Chapter VIII "Flies and Spiders":

Quote
As a boy [Bilbo] used to practise throwing stones at things, until rabbits and squirrels, and even birds, got out of his way as quick as lightning if they saw him stoop; and even grownup he had still spent a deal of his time at quoits, dart-throwing, shooting at the wand, bowls, ninepins and other quiet games of the aiming and throwing sort - indeed he could do lots of things, besides blowing smoke-rings, asking riddles and cooking, that I haven't had time to tell you about.

Of course we also have a couple of references to footballs (soccer balls). And it seems that Hobbits played a game very similar to golf (if our narrator hasn't been funning with us and they hadn't actually invented the sport).

We can guess that in Lake-town archery competitions, boating and boat races, and swimming contests were all popular activities.

From Unfinished Tales we get a bit about Númenórean sports. We might assume that these activities were also practiced in Arnor and Gondor:

Quote
Axes and spears and bows they had, and shooting with bows on foot and on horseback was a chief sport and pastime of the Númenóreans... Beyond all other pursuits the strong men of Númenor took delight in the Sea, in swimming, in diving, or in small craft for contests of speed in rowing or sailing.

And in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, the boy Bergil challenges Pippin to a wrestling match. Pippin declines, but admits to being proficient in the sport.

middle earth hoops? [In reply to] Can't Post

hello S, the Middle Earth NBA would give tall orcs, cave trolls, some men, elves big height advantage. Ents? forget it ! but hobbits and dwarves might make good point guards. orcs and trolls would fight dirty in the paint. throw lots of elbows, try to bite other players. hard game to ref.

Hooliganism is disruptive or unlawful behavior such as rioting, bullying and vandalism, usually in connection with crowds at sporting events.--wikipedia
hello o-s, yup orcs would fit the bill, saruman/sharkey's gangs that seized the shire, bill ferney, the squint eyed southerner--seems places like enedwaith and minhiriath, greyflood region and tharbad were desolate sketchy places with ruins, brigands and ruffians all about. good roster to draw from...
