The fact is [In reply to] Can't Post

that NZ tourism businesses are going to contract - local tourism can't make up for the lack of international visitors and the Government can't pay for them to keep operating as normal. We just don't have that kind of money.

Hopefully, though, most of them can keep from closing.

Ha - 're-imagining' Hobbiton? Not going to happen. [In reply to] Can't Post

All over the world, countries are struggling to work out how to minimise the damage from this pandemic, and putting their foot in it sometimes. As ever, the devil's in the detail. There's a right hoohah going on in the UK over the reopening of schools, which the government would like to see from June 1st but against which there are many objections - how, when, where etc. We're all making this up as we go along!

It's a real challenge for tourism-based businesses. [In reply to] Can't Post

We face the same challenges here in Hawaii, where tourism is a major component of our economy. Although internally we are opening and have very few active cornavirus cases, it will be a while before we'll accept visitors w/o a 14-day mandatory quarantine. Until then, there will continue to be massive unemployment.

Meanwhile, HI residents are loving the low traffic and empty beaches and hiking trails! Is Hobbiton open to residents? When I was there in 2013, it was crowded to the extent that almost ruined its magical beauty. NZ residents could have a really wonderful time there now!

That's a prevailing thought among Kiwis: [In reply to] Can't Post

see the local tourist-trap places now while they're uncrowded. Tourism NZ has just launched a marketing campaign to get Kiwis to holiday at home (which shouldn't be hard - it's not like it'll be easy to holiday anywhere else for a while).
