News story - Weta Digital's early pandemic planning Can't Post

Even before Covid-19 hit the headlines Weta Digital in Wellington had started preparations for a possible pandemic.

Executive producer David Conley said the company was trying to buy some equipment from Wuhan.

"We were just hearing whispers from concerned crew about family members in China, there was this mysterious illness, that's all we knew.

"And then when we started trying to purchase some substantial hardware, there started to be these delays."

Weta Digital started getting more reports from colleagues around the world and began its own pandemic planning, initially as more of a theoretical exercise.

But theory had to be put into practice much faster than anticipated.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauronís master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Moved in 72 hours!? Wow! [In reply to] Can't Post

I've always thought of Weta as imaginative and forward thinking... and here they really excelled! Not just by noticing those flashing red lights, but gathering up the info acting on it. Leaders globally should learn from NZ's decisive and effective action. I hope the rest of the filmmaking world can get their feet under themselves and finish their work so Weta can keep busy, but I'm sure Weta will adapt, improvise and overcome those problems, too :)
Thanks for the link!

Whispers: to listen or not to listen [In reply to] Can't Post

Just the way he phrased it took me back to the beginning of AIDS in its earliest days: whispers about some disease that was killing people, and initially it affected people you only whispered about in the early 1980s: homosexuals and heroin users. Then it got more mysterious when hemophiliacs and Haitians were added to the affected groups. And when it go more coverage and became a recognized disease, people worried you could get it by touching someone, so there was a rather famous case of a hemophiliac kid in the US whose parents had to sue so he could go to school.

Anyway, thanks for sharing the story. Moving 1500 crew to work from home over 72 hours!?!?!??! Wow upon wow.

Interesting [In reply to] Can't Post

A little of topic for Tolkien, but there are stories like that here in the UK as well. Apparently there was a case In January of a choir in Wales where someone had just come back from Wuhan and was coughing rather loudly and violently at the back. Now of course, people can't help but wonder if the virus was been spread even then!

They're staying positive and working on innovation, as usual.
