They elicited a groan from me when they appeared. It must have been quite loud.

As far as the reason for his dislike, I suspect it was the "Superman" aspects of Paul MuadDib Atreides. Besides Leto - a woman's name in the Greek legendarium/mythology - being assigned to a man ... Tolkien did know his Greek mythology after all.
