When they were filming The Hobbit in New Zealand, they could have substituted a tui for a raven.
Meet Woof Woof, an injured tui at the Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre in New Zealand. Tui are known for their mimicry of natural and mechanical sounds. The "Kakariki" and "Waxeyes" mentioned by Woof Woof are types of birds.

And I'll bet Tolkien did know about talking ravens. Wink

Sure, they may talk a little...but it's nothing to crow about. // [In reply to] Can't Post

If you like ravens, you might enjoy 'The Ravenmaster' [In reply to] Can't Post

It's a very enjoyable book written by Christopher Skaife, who is the Ravenmaster at the Tower of London. That really is his job title, and it involves making sure the ravens remain happily at the Tower because of a prophecy. Really, you couldn't make this stuff up.

@Lissuin: I watched the videos after you posted the links to them and I quite liked them! Thanks Wink

@noWizardme: That's amazing.

Hmm ... I wonder ... if it actually was a real prophecy, about bad stuff happening when the ravens leave ... meaning, if God actually spoke to someone back then about it ... it would make more sense for me though to assume it would happen differently. Not than that their flight would MAKE the trouble come, but -
I've read about animals sensing some danger before humans did and fleeing. I guess the ravens leaving would be because trouble was coming, not the other way round.

Still, I find it amazing and great that they have someone just to look after the ravens ... and that he wrote a book on it. Thanks for the recommendation Wink I am not more fond of ravens than of other animals, but cool to know about the existence of the book Smile
