Was that a dry cough and a fever this site had this afternoon? Can't Post

Am I the only one who couldn't get on to TORn this afternoon for a few hours? And it still takes much longer than usual to reload a page and all its images?

Am I correct in thinking it's because the site is practicing its social media distancing?

Something still seems to be going on with the site. [In reply to] Can't Post

For one thing, right now I can't reach the homepage. And the forums look a bit odd at the moment.

TORn also seems to be functioning faster than I've seen it work in weeks.

Corvar was doing maintenance [In reply to] Can't Post

He upgraded the server! It gave him something to do to get him out of the house. Wink
Everything should be okay now, but if he has to tweak anything, the site could go down again temporarily.

Excellent! // [In reply to] Can't Post

Silverlode

Roads go ever ever on
Under cloud and under star
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known.

Cute ruru, and kittens and silly songs - and cabbage trees 'cause they're funny. [In reply to] Can't Post

You've been warned.

I was once in a staring contest with a ruru in broad daylight. She was on a tree branch at my eye level 20feet/6-ish metres away. I thought it was a young one because it was so small, but as Ataahua says, adults are small. We just looked at one another for a couple of minutes.
She won.

I didn't know that tui weren't around your area. [In reply to] Can't Post

Does that have to do with habitat loss or winter temperatures being too low for them?

Kapiti Island, Ataahua! [In reply to] Can't Post

When you do get to make your visit there, the ruru sleep in the trees all along the people paths. They don't seem to be a bit disturbed by us non-feathered two-leggeds. Kapiti is a wonderland - a very quiet one now, I imagine, except for the chattering of fantails and the call of moreporks at night. http://nzbirdsonline.org.nz/...morepork#bird-sounds

Found this on NZ Birdsonline: [In reply to] Can't Post

Tui are boisterous, medium-sized, common and widespread bird of forest and suburbia – unless you live in Canterbury.

Apparently because the area is too open for them - think Canterbury Plains. There have been attempts to get them established around Banks Peninsula, but I'm not sure how that is going. We don't have mynas either.

The tui largely keep them away [In reply to] Can't Post

Tui are a bit bigger and tougher. We have plenty of tui where they live, and while we occasionally see a mynah, they never hang around.

Magpies, on the other hand... :)
