For one thing, right now I can't reach the homepage. And the forums look a bit odd at the moment.

He upgraded the server! It gave him something to do to get him out of the house. Everything should be okay now, but if he has to tweak anything, the site could go down again temporarily.

Cute ruru, and kittens and silly songs - and cabbage trees 'cause they're funny.

You've been warned. I was once in a staring contest with a ruru in broad daylight. She was on a tree branch at my eye level 20feet/6-ish metres away. I thought it was a young one because it was so small, but as Ataahua says, adults are small. We just looked at one another for a couple of minutes. She won.

Does that have to do with habitat loss or winter temperatures being too low for them?

When you do get to make your visit there, the ruru sleep in the trees all along the people paths. They don't seem to be a bit disturbed by us non-feathered two-leggeds. Kapiti is a wonderland - a very quiet one now, I imagine, except for the chattering of fantails and the call of moreporks at night. http://nzbirdsonline.org.nz/...morepork#bird-sounds

Tui are boisterous, medium-sized, common and widespread bird of forest and suburbia – unless you live in Canterbury. Apparently because the area is too open for them - think Canterbury Plains. There have been attempts to get them established around Banks Peninsula, but I'm not sure how that is going. We don't have mynas either.

Tui are a bit bigger and tougher. We have plenty of tui where they live, and while we occasionally see a mynah, they never hang around. Magpies, on the other hand... :)
