Jeff Bezos rumored to be in New Zealand Can't Post

Even though principal photography has already (presumably) begun, there has been no news from the filming apart from the unfortunate accident of one of the stuntwomen on February 7, reportedly during rehearsals.

Now, Stuff is reporting that Jeff Bezos' private plane has been spotted in Wellington Airport. Whether Bezos himself is in New Zealand has not been confirmed, but it seems likely he would have arrived along with his jet. As to what he might be doing in New Zealand, well, there is one obvious answer. The question is, why land in Wellington rather than Auckland?

The implication is that it has something to do with Weta, but [In reply to] Can't Post

it's just as likely he's talking with the Government about changes (announced this week) that have been made to the so-called Hobbit Law, which give more rights to workers in the screen industry: https://www.stuff.co.nz/...roversial-hobbit-law

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauronís master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Thanks, Ataahua. I am very glad to see this about the labour laws [In reply to] Can't Post

Itís a step in the right direction, at least. That whole thing was a real mess from which everybody involved emerged looking bad.

I am not anti-union, in fact I was on the executive of my union local for several years and am usually supportive of labour action. But setting aside from my own desire to see TH movies get made, I thought that for the union to go up against The Hobbit was not a smart move. There was too much money to be made or lost, too much determination on the part of Warner Bros. and Jackson, too much at stake for the New Zealand government. The viability of the NZ film industry as an international player was in question. The government was bound to step in and, sadly, it did.

As for Bezos, could the LotR project be so dear to his heart that he would go to New Zealand himself, even for discussions with the government?

I recently entered the previously mysterious world of streaming, specifically Amazon Prime. As a huge Terry Pratchett fan, the first thing I watched was Good Omens, which I loved. So I am ready for the new LotR series.

Even more speculatiion [In reply to] Can't Post

So we have:
  • Continuing negotiations with the government over deal sweeteners
  • Getting Weta onboard the series
  • Viewing the results of Amazon Studio's handiwork
In addition, two ideas have occurred to me:
  • Dealing with fallout from the accident during rehearsals
  • Filming a cameo
